A Survey of the Centro Region of Portugal

Portugal is often overlooked for its more exciting and lively neighbor, Spain. This is an unfortunate mistake for many travelers because Portugal is likewise as passionate about its historical past and also endowed with remarkable attractions that make a visit to this part of Europe more than worth it. One such notable offering of Portugal is its Centro region that reflects the land’s colorful history and natural beauty.

If you want to take a good look at a medieval fortress shaped in the form of a star, then the town to visit is Almeida. Stepping inside the walled town is like traveling back in time. There are only 1,500 inhabitants in the area, making the old-world atmosphere more than believable. Take note of the town’s lay out and discover how everything is designed to serve the end of security and defense, it’s going to be a crash-course on military architecture for you.

The town of Belmonte is one of the best places to go if you want to take a glimpse at well-preserved centuries old buildings and a natural sanctuary as well. Its claim to fame is a castle that dates back to the 13th century and the largest Jewish quarter in the country.

Also, you have to see Pousada do Convento de Belmonte and find out how a monastery can be easily transformed into some of the finest accommodation in the area. Check out the pousada’s bar and check if you can still make out the chapel and sacristy that it once was.

Its restaurant is also a must visit, it has one of the finest mushroom dishes in Portugal and is also host to the most elaborate gastronomic celebration in the region, the Mushroom Festival. For a rejuvenating nature break, the place to visit is Estrela’s Mountain nearby. It is hailed as one of Europe’s most treasured natural reserves and also home to the highest peak in the country. A short trek along its scenic mountain paths beats all the trouble it takes to get there.

The Church of Sao Tiago in Comercio Square is a must visit. It may not look very interesting from the outside but what it has to offer inside makes stopping by a delightful break. It features a rococo altar gilded with intricately carved wood that is a sight to see. It is also home to a Baroque Library dating back to 1717 and home to centuries old books that are all more than 200 years old.

Another Centro destination that should not be missed is the university town of Coimbra. It houses one of the oldest universities in the continent and the whole town permeates with a lively atmosphere of learning and fun. The town’s layout is also a sight to see. Cobbled stone pathways snake up its way from the banks of the river and meanders through bistros, cafes and boutiques.

For a further taste of history, head to the Bussaco Forest, a battle site of the 1810 Peninsular War. It is also home to more than 700 varieties of trees courtesy of Portuguese explorers who brought seeds from all over Africa and America. An exploration of the forest will take you along scenic trails, beautiful waterfalls and charming small villages. If you go just a little further, you will be pleasantly surprised to discover a Military Museum in the middle of the Forest.
