Yosemite National Park

Hiking, rock climbing, skiing, biking or plain nature sightseeing - Yosemite National Park is one of the best places in the United States to do all these and more. The natural beauty of the area, with its verdant forests, scenic meadows, gorgeous waterfalls and giant sequoias, qualify the park to be on top of any nature lovers must- visit US sites.

You don't have to be in top form to fully enjoy the scenic vistas and picturesque views of the park. You can easily reach its attractions in your car or you can hop on the open tour bus for a scenic drive around the area.

The parks main visitor draw is the Yosemite Valley. It is home to Yosemite's most popular waterfalls such as the famed cascades of Bridalveil and Ribbon Falls. The Sentinel Meadow and the area around the Yosemite Chapel offer a strategic viewpoint to catch a stunning glimpse of these falls.

The valley is also home to the most recognizable panorama of the area - the Tunnel View - a spectacular landscape of the lush Valley, the El Capitan and the majestic Bridalveil Falls. Head to the viewpoint located at the east side of the Wawona Tunnel to get a glimpse of this stunning vista.

The Mariposa Grove is another must-see attraction of the Yosemite. It is where the towering trees of the giant sequoias can be found. You can't help but strain your neck, through long periods of time, just staring in awe of their sheer heights.

The Glacier Point is a favorite viewpoint of avid Yosemite hikers. If the Glacier Point Road is open, usually between June to October, you can easily drive a car or join a tour bus to the area. However, if you are up to the challenge, it is more rewarding to take a hike in one of the several trails that will take you from the Valley to the heights of the Glacier Point. The Four Mile Trail and the Panorama Trail are two of the most popular routes.

If you happen to visit the Glacier Point during winter, nearby is the Badger Pass which offers the perfect location for cross-country skiing. There are ski huts available in the area for overnight jaunts. However, make sure to get permission and a reservation if you are planning to stay there for the night.

Other fascinating attractions in the area that are definitely worth checking out include the fiery Horsetail Falls. If you haven't seen a waterfall on fire before, this is your rare chance. Check out the Horsetail cascade during sunset from the east side of El Capitan and you'll see its waters glow red as if on fire. Stunning scenery is also available along the 39 mile drive of Highway 120 or the Tioga Road. It will take you through Crane Flat and Tuolumne Meadows.

For a totally different look at the Park, take a moonlight tour of the area and find out for yourself how the moon can magically transform Yosemite's major attractions. It could be a romantic alternative to day time Yosemite tours.

Flight Etiquette Guide

There is an excess of in-flight horror stories these days. You probably have experienced an intoxicated person a few rows back who doesn’t stop whining at the top of his lungs, or a baby who doesn’t stop crying, or the classic case of an overeager seatmate who goes on and on and on with the story of his/her life. However, more than these out-and-out exasperating situations, there are still numerous other instances that may not be as apparent but are still prevalent causes of stress to the hapless victim.

One of the major stressed during a flight can be traced to unwelcome intrusions of personal space. However, this problem cannot be entirely avoided considering that numerous individuals share a very small piece of real estate during a flight (and it seems to be getting smaller). The best that one can do is to minimize the occurrence and take the edge off of such intrusion as much as possible.

Since you will be sitting really close to others during a flight, you should pay attention to hygiene. If you have a very early flight the next day, you may want to wake up early to shower or at least take a shower the night before your flight. If you happen to be sitting beside one whose smell is just plain offensive, do not make snide remarks if you do not want to engage in a nasty fight. You may be better off approaching a flight attendant and request to be seated elsewhere.

Unless you arrived at the boarding gate less than 10 minutes before  boarding, there is no excuse for you to use the airplane’s toilet immediately after embarkation. This will just cause unnecessary delay in your departure and you are surely going to be a target of many hateful stares on your way to your seat.

If you have had a history of motion sickness, ensure that a bag for such purpose is within your reach. This should be done immediately after you have settled down on your seat. You do not want to be caught mid-barf before finding out that you do not have anything functional to use. Don’t trust yourself to make a run for the lavatory, you may find yourself throwing up your lunch on your seatmate’s lap.

If there are things you know you will use during the flight, do not put them inside the bag you will place in the overhead bin. Rather, use a small enough bag you can comfortably take with you in your seat. This is especially crucial if you are not occupying the aisle seat. You do not want to disturb your seatmate every time you feel like checking out your bag.

Be mindful of your headphone volume. Again, you will be sitting really close to others inside the plane. Your seatmate may want to doze off during the flight but finds it impossible to do so because he or she can can’t help but hear the racket caused by your favorite rock metal band.

If someone is causing you much discomfort, do not take it upon yourself to reprimand them. Flight attendants are especially trained to handle these situations. So, call for one and relay the problem.

Finally, do not forget to be your usual polite and charming self during your flight, relax and enjoy the time in the air. It takes the edge off of the situation and most often guarantees a positive response from others.

Family Vacation Money Saving Tips

Having a great time with your loved ones in a special place is definitely priceless. However, you don’t have to break the bank for the experience. There are many things you can do to cut back a few dollars that will add up to big savings. If you can stretch the budget, you’ll have more to spend for your family’s enjoyment and less stress.

So, here are a few family vacation money saving tips you can easily do while on a holiday trip with your family:

Where you eat can make a large impact on your vacation budget. Choose hotels that offer free breakfast. However, do not be too hasty  booking one for this reason alone. Check out how much they will be charging for the room sans the free breakfast. If there is a huge difference and it turns out to be a wasteful expense than a money-saving strategy, chuck the freebie and just go for the room instead.

If you have little kids in tow, check out restaurants that allow the young ones to share with the adult’s food. Kid-friendly bistros will happily give you an extra plate so you can split the meals without extra charge.

Do not eat out if you don’t have to. You can buy much cheaper food in the grocery or the local market. Once you have all the ingredients, you can easily prepare sandwiches that you can wrap for a nice picnic in a scenic park. Or, you can just eat them in your room while you are preparing to leave for your next destination. It is also a good idea to pack some snacks so that you have something to feed the kids in between meals without buying overpriced and often unhealthy food in touristy areas.

Drinks on the go are also major wallet-busters during family vacations. To ensure that you keep your family hydrated without spending too much for it, bring along refillable water bottles. Choose water refillable containers with hygienic and safety features. This will ensure that you don’t sacrifice your family’s health to save money.

Take advantage of tourist passes. This will allow the whole family to enjoy multiple tourist sites and transportation options for less. However, if you have a large family, renting a car may turn out to be more efficient and cost-friendly than taking public transportation. If this is the case, opt for passes exclusive to tourist destinations only.

If you are staying in a hotel, make use of its amenities. You don’t have to pay admission to the nearby water park if your kids can enjoy your hotel’s kiddie pool and playground.

Rather than paying hefty amounts for organized tours, research the must see tourist attractions that your family will particularly love and enjoy. You can easily organize your own day trips at less than half the price of what you’ll pay for prearranged tours.

Also, you may want to consider if all-inclusive family vacations are right for your family. Check out what you can get for how much. All-inclusive deals may turn out to be the most cost-friendly vacation option for you.

The rule is to consider all your options. Do your calculations and find out which will give you the most convenience, enjoyment and comfort at the least possible cost. If you do this, you can easily save hundreds of dollars on your next family vacation and actually enjoy your time.

Water Safety Tips When Vacationing with Children

Family vacations are often spent in places near large bodies of water. Kids just love to spend their days frolicking on beaches, scampering around swimming pools or sliding on giant water slides. All parents want to see their children having the time of their lives. However, accidents can easily happen when children are near bodies of water.

Although you want your kinds to enjoy their vacation, you do not want to disregard their safety. So it is crucial for parents or guardians to learn water safety tips when vacationing near beaches, lakes or water parks.

No matter how old you kids are, it is never too late to enroll them in swimming lessons. The skills that they will learn from the course are crucial in keeping safe around large bodies of water.

Before allowing your kids to go for a swim, talk to the lifeguard or the persons in-charge about the terrain of the area and the possible dangers that it may pose to your young ones. Give firm instructions to your kids not to wander off where you cannot see them.

It is also helpful if you can agree on a code word such that if you shout the code (the name of a pet for example), they will shout back the appropriate response. If you make it sound like a game, your children will happily participate in it. Call out the code every few minutes to make sure that your child is within hearing distance and paying attention.

Always keep a watchful eye on them. This is especially vital in open locations such as beaches and lakes. Do not rely on the lifeguards alone because they are checking the entire area and are not zoned in on your child the entire time. Also, do not make your child’s swimming skills reason enough to be complacent. Children can be easily swept by a strong current or they can easily panic when something unusual happens. If you have your eyes on them, you can immediately call for help or go to their rescue if you are qualified to do so.

Never let small children go into the water without some form of flotation device attached to their bodies. Expect to get lots of tantrums, whining or teary eyes but never give in. Be firm that they can only go swimming if they wear the safety gear. They will happily do your bidding just to get to the water.

Never leave your kids behind without any adult supervision. If you really need to go elsewhere, ask a friend or the life guard to watch out for your child while you are away. Do this no matter how short the duration of you absence may be.

Finally, it never hurts to learn CPR. If you have the skills, you will remain calm in stressful situations and you can effectively render assistance when needed.

Safety is always the most valuable consideration when traveling. This is especially true during family vacations where kids are involved. So, take heed of the above tips for a safe and wonderful family getaway.

Etiquette Guide When Traveling in a Group

The fun of traveling multiplies when shared with others. However, the fact remains that group travel also brings with it multiple frustrations and annoyances.

The pains associated with group travel cannot be avoided. Interaction between diverse personalities is bound to bring a few differences of opinion or some form of conflict between members of the group.  However, the situation is not entirely without a way out. There are certain things you can do to help make group travel stress-free for you and your travel-mates.

Here are a few tips that many will find beneficial to use as an etiquette guide when traveling in a group:

Group rules cannot be overlooked or disregarded when traveling with others. It is important for all members to be aware of what is expected of them throughout the trip. The group as a whole needs to come up with the relevant rules and reminders well before the start of travel.

Since personal commitment almost always ensures taking responsibility, it is likewise important for the members to be in agreement with the rules. Remember that these rules will determine to a certain extent how the members will behave during the trip, so you want to take the process seriously.

For the duration of the trip, make it a group habit to convene before you break off for the day. A group leader or perhaps the trip organizer can remind the group of the schedule for the following day with emphasis on the time of departure to avoid delays.  It is also important to remind members to avoid causing a racket when they arrive late at night especially when they are sharing a room with others. As some members of the group will go for a night out and have more than a few drinks than other courtesy expectations need to be set in advance. The best that any group leader or concerned member can do is to be proactive and give out reminders early on.

Moreover, what is thought of as harmless individual behavior also influences how well members of the group get along well with each other. To avoid jerking the chain of others here are a few tips you may want to take heed of:

Nobody wants to travel with someone who stinks. So, if you don’t want to spend the rest of the trip wondering why you always find yourself alone, make sure to hit the showers very now and then.

Do not play with or use other people’s belongings without asking the owner first. Don’t be like that person you hate because he easily assumes that he has free use of your stuff just because you shared a laugh together.

Everybody loves a good storyteller. A good storyteller with good timing, that is! Keep this in mind when telling the story of your life to your travel-mates. Before you get carried away with your story, be mindful of the recipient’s reaction first. For all you know, his or her expression suggests the exact of opposite of what you reckon is a sign of engrossed attention.

Finally, you can forget about everything else but not the golden rule. Do unto others what you want others do unto you. If something annoys you, it is most likely to annoy others too!

Time Saving Tips For The Airport

How often do you find yourself running the whole expanse of the airport to your check-in counter?  How about begging the airline personnel to let you board the plane? This has happened to the best and most cautious of travelers.

If this has not happened to you yet, most likely it will. There is just no knowing in advance whether you’ll get caught in a traffic jam, make a u-turn back to your place for a forgotten passport or be held up in the security line for some questioning. So, it is important to arm yourself with time saving tips for a trouble-free passage through any airport in the world.

If you have several heavy bags with you, look for a cart. It is tempting to just run with your luggage if you are late. But those bags will weigh you down. The few minutes you will use looking for a cart will save you plenty of time on your way to the counter.

What you wear will have an impact on how fast you can move from the airport’s entrance to your gate. First, make sure that you are wearing shoes that are easy to take off and put back on. Shoes with complicated laces are a big NO. If possible, wear ones that you can just easily slip on and off your feet. Next, do not wear clothes with plenty of metallic ornamentation; the same goes for your jewelry and bling. You will pass through the security check and cause an alarm in one of machines which will guarantee further delay.

When you are closing in on the security line, keep your cell phones, keys and anything metallic away from your body. Place it in your carry-on bag if you have one. I’m sure you are pretty much aware of what things are prohibited from carrying on to the aircraft, so make sure that you do not bring them with you. Better yet, check on line with the TSA in the United States (or your own country's transport regulators before you leave for the airport.  Know before you go will certainly help avoid delays at security.

If you brought along regulated items that are only allowed in checked baggage, never place them in your carry on bag with a thought in mind of transferring them later in the airport. It’s just a big time-waster.

Place your passport and other relevant travel documents in your pocket or in an accessible part of your carry on bag. If these are asked for you can just easily fish them out without having to spend minutes looking for them in the bottom of your bag.

Of course, go to the airport early. This one is pretty obvious but it is often overlooked and disregarded. Again, you just don’t know what lies ahead waiting for you on your way to the airport. It is better to be sure than sorry. Just think of how much money you will waste if your plane leaves without you in it.

Finally, immediately after you are done with the security line or the check-in counter, make room for those behind you. Do not dillydally by needlessly blocking the queue because you just have to receive or make a call, check your itinerary or review how to say good morning in the language of your destination right there and then. There may be people in that line with the an urgent need to make a dash for the boarding gate to avoid getting left behind by their plane. So, give them the same courtesy that you would want to receive if you were in their shoes.

A Staycation Getaway

Wanting to have a break but only have the weekend to spare? Search no further for your next travel destination. All you need is to look at your home city through a traveler's eyes and create a staycation.

You may not know it but you may be living in a place with plenty of interesting attractions that you are not aware of. A staycation is a perfect to quench your thirst for travel adventures while giving you a wonderful opportunity to know your own city and surrounding area better.

It is important to psyche yourself up for a great travel experience. Don't treat your experience as if it's a last ditch effort to have fun on an otherwise boring weekend. Your attitude towards the trip will have a significant impact on how successful your staycation will turn out to be. So get excited and prepare to have fun!

Planning is key to a successful outing.  Prepare for your staycation like you would a major travel destination. This means that you have to do your research. You may think you know your city like the back of your hand but reality would suggest that your knowledge of it is limited to the major thoroughfares and locations you frequent on a daily basis. It may seem silly, but taking a look at a tourist map is not really a bad idea at all. Check your city's major attractions. You may be surprised to know that you have not been in most of them.

Your friends and family members can also be a great source of information. Ask them their favorite spots in the area. They may mention a great restaurant, an idyllic park or a beautiful garden you have not heard of. Of course, the plethora of information online should not be disregarded either.

If you are at a loss on what places to visit, ask yourself which sites you are most interested in when visiting new travel destinations. Your interest may take you to the city's famous landmarks and monuments, flea markets and fresh produce fairs, or entertainment hubs and shopping districts. You will surely find something exciting that appeals to you and that may be a unique party of your city.

After you have all the information that you need, list the places you are interested in. Divide them by location and devise a schedule around them. If you are planning to have lunch at a particular place, you may want to coordinate your site visits such that you will not have to travel across town from your lunch destination.

You may also want to take a different form of transportation than what you're used to. How about taking the train, the bus, or your bicycle? It not only gives the experience an adventurous spin but it also gives a new perspective to what would otherwise be an ordinary experience.

Of course, no tourist leaves home without their cameras. So take one along with you and make sure to get plenty of shots of everything that you find interesting along the way. Be a tourist for the day and have a great time discovering and exploring your city.  You'll be surprised how much fun it really is!

Avoiding Monkey Attacks

Before you raise those eyebrows, monkeys may not be the usual pedestrians where you come from but they are usual occupants of temples and beaches in some of the most popular destinations in Asia and Africa.

So, if you are planning to visit the exciting destinations of India, Thailand, or Cape Town (to name a few) anytime soon, you may want to equip yourself with essential tips on how to prevent these cute and agile little creatures from ruining your vacation.

Before visiting a major tourist destinations such as temples, pilgrimage sites, or beaches, ask your tour guide or research in advance about the monkey population in the area. If monkeys are to be expected, you are better off leaving your bag in the hotel or your car. Monkeys found in the sites frequented by tourists are pretty much conditioned - from years of experience, no less - that bag-totting visitors have goodies hidden in their pouches. Some of these little creatures may have a penchant for bag snatching, so it is safer not to bring a purse of any kind that'll tempt them to give you a rub down.

Feeding a monkey may seem like a good idea but the fact is it's definitely not! Seeing you with some snacks may excite them and cause them to outrun each other to your direction. It may also cause an ugly fight among them if you favor one over another. So, the number one rule is to never bring food with you.

You may visit some areas with vendors selling bananas to tourists who want to feed the monkeys. This may suggest these primates are used to  benevolent human contact but you should not be complacent as to actually hand them some bananas in good faith. If you wish to give them some treats, don't hand-feed them. Place your goodies in a safe distance from the monkeys and leave it there. They will not need much prodding to help themselves to it and avoid jumping on you.

Monkeys, like any other animals, attack when they feel threatened. So you should be careful not to create any gesture or sound that will make them think you are a threat to them. Always stay a safe distance between you and the monkey. You don't have to go near them to get a good view. Your camera's zoom lenses are there for a reason, so use them instead.

Monkeys may feel threatened by your pearly whites. Although your fellow humans find a big smile as an invitation for a friendly interaction, primates consider the gesture as an invitation for combat. So, avoid flashing your teeth at them if you don't want them to get all riled up. Shouting and loud noises should also be avoided.

What if one jumps on you? The worst thing that you can do is panic and start swatting wildly. It will definitely not help you in any way except ensure that you actually get a bite or two. Instead, remain calm and walk slowly despite your overwhelming urge to freak out. If you don't have a bag or some snacks to run off with, the monkey will soon get bored and leave you for more exciting exploits. So, keep your cool and don't let these little monkeys get the better of you.   No reason you cannot enjoy these wonderful animals but do so with caution and you will wonderful stories to tell.

Costa Rica Adventure

If you want to visit sunny South America but are too concerned about security issues and local unrest in many of its countries, you would be thrilled to discover Costa Rica. This tropical paradise is spared the crisis shared by its neighbors but doesn't lack the natural beauty that travelers have fallen in love with in this part of the continent.

Cost Rica is home to dramatic coastlines, sun kissed beaches, verdant forests and rich fauna. Adrenalin junkies will find their own piece of adventure haven in several outdoor destinations in the country while laid back beach goers will discover a tranquil alternative to the crowded beaches of the major Caribbean destinations.

Your first glimpse of Costa Rica should be the capital city of San Jose. It's the best place to experience the cultural rhythm of the country. You may not want to visit each of the 33 museums dotting the city, but art enthusiasts will want to drop by the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design while performance art aficionados will not regret a go-see at the remarkable Teatro Nacional. If you are into gold or jade antiquities, you may want to check out the Gold and Jade museums while in San Jose.

If an exciting night life is more to your liking, you will not find San Jose wanting. El Pueblo is the place to go with its vast selection of clubs and restaurants. Sprinkled along the busy streets are charming art galleries and fascinating shops all inviting your attention. Or, you can head to the exciting beaches of Tamarindo or Jaco for all-night beach parties.

You don't want to miss the surfing scene while at Jaco. If you are a pro, you will find the surf exciting and challenging. If you are only starting out in the sport or just eager to try, you might want to take advantage of surfing lessons offered by many of the facilities in the area. Sport fishers will also find the area a good base for a challenging day at the open sea. Nature trippers should head out to the nearby Carara Biological Reserve for some exciting wild life sightings.

Eager for some adrenalin pumping activities? You will find Costa Rica loaded with plenty of heart pumping adventures. The Arenal Canopy offers an exhilarating zip line experience. If rafting is your thing, then you'll find the rapids of Pacuare River especially exciting. Just approach any of the major tour providers in the country and they'll easily take you to any thrilling ride of your choice.

Other exciting destinations include the Parque Nacional Turtuguero where endangered green turtles lay their eggs and other protected species reside. There is also the magnificent cascade of La Paz Waterfalls and its beautifully-kept gardens. Finally, if you find volcanoes fascinating, you may want to check out the erupting fireworks of Arenal (when it is active) at night for its spectacular display of power and beauty, or the azure crater lake of Irazu as well as the boiling waters of Poas.

This just goes to show that Costa Rica has something exciting to offer for whatever captivates you.

Dramatic Landscapes of Guatemala

Guatemala may not be as exciting and bustling as its neighboring Caribbean countries, but it is a country of antiquity and natural beauty that many travelers find interesting. It is a small enough country for extensive exploration for short periods of time or you can just choose to stay in one or two of its provinces and enjoy the relaxing bliss of its laid back atmosphere and beautiful scenery.

It is undeniable that the country is a goldmine of ancient archeological sites. However, Guatemala has more to offer its visitors. It is a country gifted with so much natural beauty that more than makes up for its lack of world-class amenities.

For a glimpse of the country's old grandeur, head out to La Antigua. It is located just southwest of the city center. Despite the destruction brought about by massive earthquakes of the past, portions of the old capital remain stunningly beautiful with colorful houses, cobble stone streets and scenic gardens. The area is popular among tourists so you will not lack accommodation, entertainment or dining options  in Antigua.

For an interesting trip along the country's dense jungles and mangrove swamps, take a detour from the Puerto Barrios to the small town of Livingston. You'll find a charming village of colorful houses and you can hire a boat to take you to the heart of the jungle river. Glide along the Rio Dulce through lake El Golfete right into Amatique Bay. The trip will take you along thick mangrove forests, steep cliffs and right through the waterways of Chocon Machacas Biosphere. There is plenty of wildlife to focus your camera on along the way. You just might catch a glimpse of the massive sea cow if you are lucky.

Guatemala is  volcano country.  It is, in fact, home to at least 33 volcanoes. You can take a guided tour to the dramatic peaks of the Pacaya Volcano and treat yourself to a beautiful panorama of Guatemala City and surrounding area. The Ancient Ruins of Guatemala

Guatemala is often overlooked as a tourist destination in South America. Many prefer the more exciting cities of Mexico, Bahamas and Cancun. But, if you wish to discover even more exciting ancient ruins, there are plenty to discover in Guatemala.

Most probably, your flight will take you to the heart of the country's capital, Guatemala City. Moving on to the next province of more exotic ambience may prove to be more than a temptation. But, you are better off putting a reign on your excitement.

Guatemala City has plenty of offerings you don't want to miss. A day or two spent in the city should be well worth it. If you cannot go anywhere else, at least pass by the Parque Central for a good overview of the capital. On site you'll find the National Palace, National Library and the Cathedral. They make for great photo opportunities before you start loading up your camera with endless ancient ruins shots.

Art aficionados will want to drop by the National Museum of Modern Art or the Popol Vuh Museum for a beautiful collection of colonial art. If you are into neo-classical and Baroque church architecture, you don't want to miss out on the many centuries old churches in the city such as the Hermitage in El Carmen.

After a short exploration of Guatemala City, be on your way to it's many ancient ruins. First up is one of Guatemala's prized ancient sites located  in the city of Tikal. This spectacular find is estimated to stand (and buried) in more than 6 square miles of territory complete with causeways and plazas among its many temples and buildings.

You will no doubt be in awe at the vastness of this archeological site, where impressive Mayan architecture is most evident in the remains of about 3000 structures! Even more impressive is the fact that this spectacular ancient ground is believed to date back to 800 BC. You may also want to stop at the Sylvanus Morley Museum at the site's entrance for a more detailed study of the intricate sculptures and frescoes of this long lost era.

The Mayans were an astoundingly advanced civilization. To see for yourself, check out additional ruins in Ceibal where you'll find an ancient observatory believed to have been used to study the expanse of the sky, the stars and and heavenly bodies! Nearby is the Altar de los Sacrificios, and if your imagination is crazy enough you just might have a hair-raising experience while in the area.

Quirigu, near the port of Puerto Barrios, displays one of the most interesting Mayan finds - the biggest carved stelae unearthed in the country. These intricately designed altars reflect not only the belief system of the ancient Mayan people but also tell a story of some of the most significant periods of their history.

The Las Capuchinas in the old capital of Antigua is hailed as one of the most beautiful ruins in the country. Although not Mayan in origin, it is a beautifully preserved convent established by Spanish nuns back in 1736 and well worth a visit. The site features charming gardens and courtyards. With its strategic geographic location, it offers some of the most panoramic views in the country and I am sure you will find them awe-inspiring.

If you are still hungry for more interesting ruins in Guatemala, check out  Abaj Takalik, El Mirador, Uaxact  and Yaxh  to name only a few. Each of these sites offers something unique and fascinating and you may find them especially appealing to your curiousity.

How to Behave in a Hammam

Bathing for most cultures is pretty much done in the private confines of the bathroom. The nearest experience some of us  have had with public baths come in the form of public swimming pools and water theme parks. This is perhaps why Arabic public baths, commonly known as hammam, are a novel cultural experience to many tourists. If you are feeling a pull of travel adventurism, here's a short guide on how to behave yourself in a hammam.

Most Arab cities have several hammam, however they are not conspicuous to the non-Arab reader. To spare yourself from walking aimlessly around the city in search for one, ask one of the hotel staff for a recommendation and a map. If you would rather go out and do the searching on your own, you will have an easier time spotting a hammam if you look near mosques.

Be aware that males and females do not share the same public hammam. So, before you barge in enthusiastically, make sure that you are entering the appropriate one!  However, if you want to bring along a friend of the opposite sex, you are better off in a private hamman offered by hotels, although the experience may not be as authentic.

Unless you are sure that bathing essentials such as soap and body scrubs will be provided, it is safe to bring your own. You just have to drop by the nearby souq for your purchases. Once inside, you will be given two buckets for the hot and cold water respectively. Make sure to rinse and return these buckets to their proper places after you are done.

Nudity is not a usual scene in many Turkish hammam. However, if you happen to be in one, you don't have to go naked if it makes you uncomfortable. Leave your underwear on or you can cover yourself with a towel.

Remember that scrub downs and massages are usually offered by the hamman's staff as part of the money you paid or for additional cost. So, do not be surprised if an individual approaches you and starts giving you a rubdown. Just relax - nothing obscene is happening. It's all part of the bathing process. If you are not comfortable, politely decline the offer.

To ensure that you are not doing anything crazy, at least to local standards, observe what is happening around you and follow suit. However, do this discreetly as others may consider your innocent assessment as indecent gawking.

Here are some of the things that you need to avoid doing. First, since you are sharing the valuable resource of water with other bathers, limit your use to at least two buckets or to such number of buckets that the locals are getting so as not to use more than what is considered acceptable.

Finally, be careful when dousing yourself with cold water. You may consider the touch of cold in your skin a refreshing respite from the sweltering heat of the hammam, but locals do not appreciate getting splashed by your cold water!

Keep all these in mind and happy public bathing!

Sidetrip to Shenzhen

Hong Kong is a major destination in a gigantic China and a familiar Asian destination to many. But many are not aware that in just less than an hour by rail from the city, an interesting travel destination awaits. I am talking about Shenzhen.

Do not be discouraged by its industrial powerhouse image. It may not have the rich historical sites and natural charm of other tourist destinations, but it certainly has something unique to offer in the form of extraordinary and exciting theme parks.

Accommodation in Shenzhen should not be a problem. Countless hotels, guest houses and hostels are scattered around the city. Whether you are a penny pincher or an extravagant spender, you can find the perfect place for your needs.

Don't worry though, predators are separated from their prey to ensure that no animal is placed in danger.

If you fancy chilling out in the beach, take a pick from Dameisha Beach Park and Xiaomeisha Resort. The latter is a personal favorite for its crystal clear waters and the scenic views of Dapeng Bay.

Beauty and tranquility is also within reach at Xili Lake Resort. It is perfectly nestled at the base of Xili Mountain and surrounded by natural springs and cascading falls. Walk along the shaded corridor surrounding the lake and enjoy the peace and quiet it offers.

New Zealand is a country of indubitable beauty. Its landscape is a rich mix of everything that travelers find most stunning and breathtaking. New Zealand has charming harbors and picturesque coastlines, prehistoric forests and alpine lakes, therapeutic hot springs and mud baths, and a thriving diverse wildlife as well.

New Zealand encompasses two major islands. To the north are the more developed cities and principalities including capital city of Auckland. To the south are the more dramatic landscapes of alpine peaks, fjords and verdant forests that many have come to associate with New Zealand.

Since New Zealand is a cornucopia of exciting and stunning destinations, we will first take a survey of what the North Island has in store for visitors of this enchanting country. The attractions in the South Island call for a separate article in the future.

More likely than not, you will be flying directly to Auckland. The city may not have the exotic terrain you visited New Zealand for, but it too, has plenty of exciting attractions and must visit destinations.

Auckland's harbor, in particular, is one of the best by international standards. In fact, it is hailed as the “City of Sails” because it features more boats per capita than anywhere in the world. Sights to See in Moscow

There is no better place of discovering the very heart of Russia than through its capital – Moscow. The city reflects beautifully the country’s colorful history and cultural legacy in its splendid architecture, impressive museums and inspiring cultural performances. Visitors will not be disappointed with what Moscow has to offer.

The perfect area to commence your survey of Moscow is at the oldest part of the city known as Kremlin. The old quarter dates back to the very beginning of the city’s existence around 1147.  The Kremlin is a magnificent fortress spanning 20 towers and housing various significant structures and buildings. There are palaces, churches, museums and impressive government buildings in the area.

At the center of the city is the famous cobbled stone Red Square where the remains of Lenin - in crystal casket - can still be viewed by the public. It is also where the Moscow’s most recognizable landmark, St. Basil’s Cathedral and its colorful domes, can be found. Another notable church in the city is the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the world’s biggest Orthodox church, that was built only at the turn of the century and features some of the best contemporary Russian artworks on display.

The church of Annunciation Cathedral is exceptionally striking with its elaborate interior walls, icons and murals. It was exclusively reserved only for royalty in the past so there is no surprise with its plush ornamentation and extravagant architecture. If you are interested in historically relevant sites - checkout throne of Ivan the Terrible – seat of the coronation of tsars at the Assumption Cathedral. For a more elaborate display of glorious treasures, the museum of the Armoury Palace and its collection of valuable jewel-encrusted articles should not be missed.

If you want to see more of remarkable pieces of Russian art, the best place to do it is at the famous Treyakov Gallery where a good number of icons dating from the 11th up to the 17th century are also on display together with traditional Russian masterpieces. It also features an outstanding exhibit of modern artworks of the 18th and 20th century.

Cultural performances are best witnessed at the long standing Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre that dates back to 1824. Russia’s ballet and opera companies need no elaborate introduction considering that they are not only considered world-renowned but also hailed as one of the best by international standards. Aside from stellar performances, the theatre itself is likewise a sight begging to be seen. Its sparkling five-tiered interior, fabulous hanging chandeliers and plush velvet furnishings complete the grand picture of the biggest theater in the world.

Finally, the best place to tour around the city and move from one Moscow attraction to another is to go underground and hop on the city’s metro. You will be pleasantly surprised at how gorgeous the facility is. It is elaborately ornamented with marble floors, impressive pillars and beautiful artworks. It is one of the few underground rail systems in the world that are considered an attraction of their own.

Attractions in Windhoek Namibia

Right smack in the middle of Namibia lies its capital, Windhoek. If you are expecting a ramshackle and grubby city similar to those in some of its neighboring countries, you are in for a big surprise.

Hailed as the cleanest city in the entire continent, Windhoek has a unique charm all its own. At first look, you will be pleasantly taken aback with the evident German influence in the city’s architecture and its people’s lifestyle. However, the legacy of its ancient inhabitants remains one of the major attractions in the region.

Impressions of Namibia’s colonial past continue to linger in the city’s buildings and various dwelling places. The Alte Feste or the Old Fortress in particular is the foremost landmark of Germany’s previous colonial presence. It now houses a museum that displays the country’s history starting from its ancient origins, through the occupation of the German military forces and culminating in the struggle for and the attainment of its independence.

Other notable structures in the area of relevant historical value include the 1910 sandstone church of Christuskirche and the parliament building or Tintenpalast. German influence is also apparent in the city’s cuisine, although slightly modified with a Namibian twist.

Although European influences permeate in the city’s culture, Windhoek remains a ruggedly stunning landscape quintessential of the African continent. The Spitzkoppe is one good example. It is a mountain of towering granite outcrops on the vast grassland plain. Aside from these amazing rock formations, Spitzkoppe is frequented by many for the best hiking opportunities found in the area. If you are an avid hiker, you can test your skill in a technical climb at the Spitzkoppe itself. But if you do not have the skills and/or the gear, you are better off at the less demanding Pontok Mountains nearby.

For a spectacular display of ancient rock art, there are several destination options in Windhoek. Twyfelfontein has the largest collection of these prehistoric markings, totaling to an estimated 2,500 figures. Outlines of animals such as elephants, lions and antelopes, believed to be thousands of years old, are vividly displayed on the stone walls.

Unless accompanied with a guide, do not attempt to go there on your own because caretakers of the area will not let you in. Although a tad inconvenient, do not get annoyed with this seemingly unnecessary rule. Vandals have done great damage to the area, so these measures are needed to avoid repetitions of such unfortunate incidents.

Another destination that offers an impressive display of ancient stone wall paintings is Brandberg. It is famous for the rock painting known as the “White Lady” which actually resembles an image of a man in a white outline. It was discovered back in 1955 and believed to have been drawn about 2,000 years ago. Brandberg is also home to Namibia’s highest peak – Konigstein – which is another favorite hiking destination in the country. If you want to scale the summit, you can join guided hikes regularly offered in the area. Several outdoor adventure outfitters will be more than willing to accommodate you.

Etosha National Park and Fish River Canyon - Namibia

Namibia is a road tripper’s paradise. If you don’t mind seeing vast empty landscapes for hours at a time but delight in the anticipation of spectacular destinations en route, then you should find the country a perfect location for your open road adventure.

The Etosha National Park is a must visit to those who love to see exotic animals in their natural habitat. It has one of the biggest concentrations of wild life population in Namibia and the landscape itself is something striking to see. It is home to more than a hundred species of mammals, over 300 bird species and an estimated 110 reptile varieties.

The name Etosha, which means “place of dry water” or “great white place”, perfectly captures the site’s topography resembling that of a wide shallow salt pan. The pan remains dry for most of the year but during heavy rains, thousands of flamingo flock to the area to take advantage of the shallow water deposited in the saltine basin.

There are plenty of private lodges surrounding the national park. These facilities offer a wide range of accommodation options from the most basic of comforts to lavish luxury depending on how much visitors are willing to pay. The lodges are also ideal providers of outdoor adventure trips because independent guided tours in the park come rarely, if at all.

Campsites are also good alternatives to private lodges. There are the original campsites of Namutoni, Okaukejo and Halali, as well as the more recent and better equipped Onkoshi. These campsites provide accommodation, restaurants and garage and car repair facilities for campers and day trippers. When visiting Okaukuejo and Halali campsites make sure to check out their watering holes to get a closer look of the local wildlife such as rhinos and elephants to name a few.

Make sure to return to your campsite or private lodging before the sun sets. Visitors to the park are not allowed to roam around at night to avoid encounters with predators prowling the landscape for unsuspecting preys.

Another remarkable Namibia attraction is the Fish River Canyon which is one of the biggest and grandest in the world. Be prepared to feel dwarfed when visiting the spectacular gorge and be amazed at the extraterrestrial feel of its landscape. What makes this gorge especially interesting is that it is not a result of gradual erosion like those of other canyons in different parts of the world. Rather, it is a product of an abrupt collapse brought about by violent core movements. The result is a sudden and unexpected drop out of the flat barren plateau from, seemingly, out of the blue.

For visitors who love a challenging hiking adventure, the Fish River Canyon will not disappoint. It is one of the best hiking destinations in all of Namibia with a demanding trail extending to 85 kilometers. It usually takes 4 to 5 days to complete the hike. Best time to rough it out is in the months of May until October. When in the area, you may also want to drop by the hot springs of Ai-Ais and the attractions of Huns Mountains, both of which also form part of beautiful Fishriver Canyon Park.

Attractions in Namib Desert - Namibia

The Namib Desert and its surrounding areas are one of the best destinations in Namibia. It offers a variety of fascinating attractions that range from the natural spectacle of sand dunes, exciting seaside adventures, and a quaint German village in the middle of the desert.

The sand dunes in Sossusvlei are one of the most famous attractions in the country. This seemingly endless expanse of rolling and shifting sea of sand is a spectacular sight to behold. Watch in fascination the never-ending transformation of the landscape right before your very eyes.

When the sun is up, the heat in the area can be unbearable. So, time your visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. It is much better if you are already in the area just before sunrise or sunset to witness the magnificent display of color in the sky and its reflection on the animated sand. Photographers whether beginners or experts, will find that every angle they see is worth more than a few clicks of their camera. Visitors are advised to take a 4x4 vehicle for easy navigation of the area.

Technically speaking, “vlei” is a term for basin or depression on the ground. So, the word Sossusvlei only refers to that one huge basin in the area where the dunes are closing in. However, due to the immense popularity of the attraction, the entire site is now collectively referred to as the Sossusvlei.

This "pan" in the middle of the desert looks like nothing more than a circular jigsaw puzzle of dry cracked mud. Despite the seeming nothingness, the landscape inspires the imagination and makes one feels like a curious visitor to an unknown planet. During heavy rains, which rarely happen, the cracked pan catches just enough water to transform it into a thriving waterhole for desert wildlife and vegetation – a different yet equally splendid view of the area.

Another must visit attraction in the Namib Desert region is the charming seaside town of Swakopmund. After a few days of traveling through vast emptiness of the Namibian wilderness, the sight of the beautiful village is both enchanting and enthralling. With the palm-lined beaches at its foreground and the exciting sand dunes at its background, there is no shortage of exciting things to do and see in the area.

For those who want to take in the contrasting landscape of Swakopmund, the best place to do it is in the sky onboard a hot air balloon. If you want a more exciting, adrenalin-pumping adventure, parachuting is another way of taking in the view. To take advantage of the sea, you can go beach angling or deep sea fishing. For some dune action, rent some gear and try the exciting escapades of sandboarding, dune carting and quad biking. Or, you can just sit back and relax right in the village and enjoy its quaint atmosphere at its cafes, museums or art galleries.

Not far away from Swakopmund are several attractions that you may be interested in. For wild life watching you can visit Cape Cross and its colony of seals, or the thousands of flamingo at the Swakopmund Salt Works and the Walvis Bay Lagoon. You can also take a short tour of the Welwitschia drive and get a good glimpse of the desert plant and animal inhabitants.

What You Need to Know about Expedition Cruising

World weary travelers often avoid taking a cruise for fear of spending days onboard nothing but a floating mall. If you do not want to deal with thousands of tourists, theme nights, crowded ship amenities and touristy destinations but you wish to experience the excitement of being at sea for days at a time, expedition cruising may be perfect for you.

Expedition cruising, as the name suggests, places close emphasis on the exciting world of exploring remote locations of spectacular natural beauty and rich diversity. Instead of a detailed itinerary, you book for an open ended route that may be inspired by a wild life sighting or simply to take advantage of a good weather.  Instead of typical tropical locations full of tourists, it may take you to rarely heard of localities in search of the wild and the untamed.

The ports of call are not bustling tourist spots but quaint little towns with exotic names and the onshore excursions do not involve cramped shuttles and overcrowded attractions but may include a rafting tour along side icebergs, swimming with whales and dolphins, or trekking through lush jungles. You are even welcome to observe the captain and his crew map out the course of the voyage.

This type of cruising is not made for just any kind of traveler. You need to be physically fit to keep up with the demands of the trip. You also need to be very flexible to accommodate the open-ended itinerary which may take a few extended days at sea and the weather at times can be less than hospitable.

These cruises are usually aboard smaller vessels that provide better access and mobility in smaller ports. Part of the expedition cruising attraction includes the personalities that join the trip. These cruises usually cater to less than a hundred like minded individuals who thrive in the open call of the wild. Some of them are wildlife photographers, nature trippers and extreme adventure enthusiasts.

What is great about this type of cruising is the absence of frills but not of comfortable luxury. You can still enjoy an en-suite cabin, good food and onboard recreation amenities. Although the latter can never compare with the larger-than-life offering of mass market cruises, the good company and adventure more than makes up for it.

To enjoy this once in a lifetime adventure, be prepared to pay a few for it. The small size of vessel and the unique itineraries command top dollar. Also, it is wise to book way in advance. Trips such as these are usually arranged more than a year before to take into consideration changes of the weather and migratory seasons. Keep your schedule flexible for last minute changes that are sometimes inevitable.

Some of the most interesting parts of the globe frequented by expedition cruising includes Antartica where you can get a glimpse of colossal icebergs and walk among thousands of penguins. Spitsbergen Island in Norway is another favorite where you can watch walruses and polar bears in a hunting frenzy. These are just some of the exotic regions that expedition cruising makes accessible to travelers who are eager to answer the call of adventure.
