Dramatic Landscapes of Guatemala

Guatemala may not be as exciting and bustling as its neighboring Caribbean countries, but it is a country of antiquity and natural beauty that many travelers find interesting. It is a small enough country for extensive exploration for short periods of time or you can just choose to stay in one or two of its provinces and enjoy the relaxing bliss of its laid back atmosphere and beautiful scenery.

It is undeniable that the country is a goldmine of ancient archeological sites. However, Guatemala has more to offer its visitors. It is a country gifted with so much natural beauty that more than makes up for its lack of world-class amenities.

For a glimpse of the country's old grandeur, head out to La Antigua. It is located just southwest of the city center. Despite the destruction brought about by massive earthquakes of the past, portions of the old capital remain stunningly beautiful with colorful houses, cobble stone streets and scenic gardens. The area is popular among tourists so you will not lack accommodation, entertainment or dining options  in Antigua.

For an interesting trip along the country's dense jungles and mangrove swamps, take a detour from the Puerto Barrios to the small town of Livingston. You'll find a charming village of colorful houses and you can hire a boat to take you to the heart of the jungle river. Glide along the Rio Dulce through lake El Golfete right into Amatique Bay. The trip will take you along thick mangrove forests, steep cliffs and right through the waterways of Chocon Machacas Biosphere. There is plenty of wildlife to focus your camera on along the way. You just might catch a glimpse of the massive sea cow if you are lucky.

Guatemala is  volcano country.  It is, in fact, home to at least 33 volcanoes. You can take a guided tour to the dramatic peaks of the Pacaya Volcano and treat yourself to a beautiful panorama of Guatemala City and surrounding area. Not far away are several sites of massive stone head sculptures. Watch closely and you'll notice their eyes closed and their brows furrowed. It makes for exciting photo opportunities if not a mind boggling spectacle.

To experience the traditional life of Guatemala's indigenous tribes, head to the Highlands. Many of the tribes are still wearing traditional handwoven colorful textiles. You want to schedule your visits during market days or fiestas to participate in their exciting celebrations, partake of their local cuisine and engage in an exciting haggling experience for beautiful handcrafted products and fresh produce.

The town of Solola is not to be missed. It lies amidst dramatic mountains and volcanoes. It is also home to the picturesque Lake Atitlan. The lake is a favorite site for leisure activities among locals and visitors alike. It has become a busy hub of water activities such as skiing, windsurfing, boating and swimming. There are also plenty of cafes, restaurants and guesthouses in the area. It makes a perfect destination to cap off your exciting Guatemala experience.
