Sidetrip to Shenzhen

Hong Kong is a major destination in a gigantic China and a familiar Asian destination to many. But many are not aware that in just less than an hour by rail from the city, an interesting travel destination awaits. I am talking about Shenzhen.

Do not be discouraged by its industrial powerhouse image. It may not have the rich historical sites and natural charm of other tourist destinations, but it certainly has something unique to offer in the form of extraordinary and exciting theme parks.

Accommodation in Shenzhen should not be a problem. Countless hotels, guest houses and hostels are scattered around the city. Whether you are a penny pincher or an extravagant spender, you can find the perfect place for your needs.

When in Shenzhen you don't have to travel long and far to visit the famous landmarks and attractions from all over the world. All you have to do is drop by the Window of the World and you'll have more than a hundred world renowned sites literally before your eyes. Whether you are looking for the Eiffel Tower of Paris, Pyramids of Egypt, ancient ruins of Angkor Wat or canals of Venice, you'll find them there.

If you want to narrow down your exploration to China's attractions - visit the Splendid China and the China Folk Culture Villages. You will be treated to many of China's displays and performances of local arts and culture. Splendid China features scaled down replicas of the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses, the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace among others.

To amuse the inner child in you, the Happy Valley theme park is a must visit. Its features jaw-dropping landscapes such as the Atlantis, the Firth Forest and the Lost Maya to name a few. Enjoy the rides in the Maya Water Park, play with famous characters in the Cartoon City and get ready for an exciting adrenalin rush in Adventure Hill.

You can even go on a safari adventure without leaving the city of Shenzhen. Its 120 hectare Safari Park features exotic animals freely roaming around the area. You'll find Bengal Tigers, lions, wolves and tigers flexing their muscles while giraffes, pandas and kangaroos scamper around, play and amuse. Don't worry though, predators are separated from their prey to ensure that no animal is placed in danger.

If you fancy chilling out in the beach, take a pick from Dameisha Beach Park and Xiaomeisha Resort. The latter is a personal favorite for its crystal clear waters and the scenic views of Dapeng Bay.

Beauty and tranquility is also within reach at Xili Lake Resort. It is perfectly nestled at the base of Xili Mountain and surrounded by natural springs and cascading falls. Walk along the shaded corridor surrounding the lake and enjoy the peace and quiet it offers.

Finally, although shopping is undeniably great in nearby Hong Kong, it won't hurt to check the many shopping centers of Shenzhen. Luxury goods are as easy to find as cheap knock-offs. You may want to take a look at Huaquiang Bei Shopping Area for an overwhelming array of inexpensive merchandise of all kinds.
