A short three hours drive from world-renowned Phuket is the quiet and scenic province of Krabi. Phuket Guide Beyond Patong

Visitors to Thailand almost always make Phuket a part of their itinerary. It is less than an hour’s flight from Bangkok or a 12 hour bus ride if you wish to save a great deal of cash. You can also fly directly to the island’s international airport from many of the major cities in the world.

Unfortunately, many tourists content themselves to spend all their days in the busy and extremely touristy area of Patong. Believe it or not, there is more to Phuket than Patong. So, take advantage of the excellent roads and explore the many spectacular facets of the island.

Patong is where the action happens. It has the biggest concentration of night clubs, restaurants, hotels, hostels, shops and everything that you can possibly associate to tourist destinations. As a result, it can get a tad noisy, crowded and risqu้. If you are looking for a different vibe, you better base yourself in other areas in Phuket.

Some of the more pleasant yet less crowded areas in the island are Kata, Karon, Rawai, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao. All these areas have their share of white sand beaches and excellent accommodation. Whether you are looking for high end hotels or affordable hostels, you will not have difficulty finding the right fit in these areas.

Although their night life scenes are not as vibrant and exciting as that of Patong, they offer romantic al fresco dinners by the beach or parties at exclusive clubs. Patong is just a few minutes drive from these areas so you can easily check it out if you want a more exciting night out.

Phuket Town is also a good alternative. It may not have immediate access to white sand beaches, but it will take you only a few minutes drive to find one. Phuket Town is also the best place to go for shopping. There are several shopping malls and the souvenir shops sell goods at much lower prices than their counterparts in other touristy areas. Orkney’s Natural Beauty

Before you head out to Norway’s popular Fjords, check out the cultural and historical offerings of this country first. If you don’t have much time to spare, the city of Bergen is just the perfect place to soak up the Norwegian atmosphere.

Bergen’s location makes up most of its charm. It is nestled on the foot of the seven hills at its backdrop and protected from the North Sea by a harbor at its foreground. Add to this the brightly colored wooden houses characteristic of the city and you have a striking destination that is more than pleasant to the eye.

Head to the harbor market of Torget and experience the flurry of activities in the area. It is surrounded by pubs, cafes and restaurants as well as the nearby exciting fish market, indeed a perfect place for watching people and befriending locals.

From Torget, head to the harbor-side where the colorful wooden houses are located. You’ll find several cobblestone pathways in the area. Select a path and commence your tour of the old neighborhood of Bryggen, the city’s medieval quarter. Follow the path as it winds up past charming houses and their bright hues. Find out if you can distinguish which houses were built during the 18th, 19th or 20th century.

As you walk around the old city, you will soon find yourself passing by the Hanseatic Museum. The museum itself dates back to 1872 and displays a collection of items related to trading of the German merchants back in the day.

If you wish to find out how Bergen looked and felt like back in the medieval times, you better check out the Bryggen’s Museum which is entirely dedicated to the medieval history of the city. The location of the museum is also of special interest because it was built over the site believed to have been the first settlement at Bryggen. You will also find exhibits dating back to the 12th century that are displayed right on the very sites that they were discovered. This is a great place to visit for history vultures and medieval enthusiasts.

The old city also features the Bergen Aquarium, a cool place to visit if you have kids in tow. The facility features over 70 aquariums housing a multitude of fish species, as well as penguins and seals, sourced from several locations around the world.

For spectacular panoramas of the city and the surrounding islands, you can take either of the two funiculars in Bergen. The nearest funicular is less than half a kilometer from the Fish Market. It will take you on top of Mount Floyen. The view from the top is breathtaking. Many visitors are just content to just sit around and soak in the stunning sight but if you are up for an adventure there are several trails around the area that’ll take to you to even more scenic vistas.

The other funicular, 5 kilometers away from the city center, will take you to the top of Mount Ulriken, the highest peak in Bergen. Although the view from the top is arguably not as stunning as the ones in Mount Floyen, the area is a great hiking destination to those who love the outdoors. There is a route connecting the peak to the nearby Mount Floyen. It is only a 4 hour hike but the trail is challenging with plenty of ups and downs along the way.

Bergen is also famous for its annual music festival. So if you want to double the fun and maximize your Norwegian experience, it is best to travel during the month of May. This is the month when the rain spares the city and the festival is celebrated to make the most out of the wonderful and rare Norwegian sunshiny weather.

Visiting the Magical Past in Orkney Scotland

Scotland may be famous for the Loch Ness Monster, golf and kilt-wearing highlanders but its dramatic landscape, colorful history and rich culture are some of its best features. The best Scottish city to experience this remarkable side of country is in the city of Orkney. It is one of the top tourist destinations in the area due mainly to its charming centuries old buildings, mind-boggling ancient ruins and a ruggedly stunning landscape.

You can spend as little as two days in the area or as long as a couple of months and still have something more to check out and discover. It is a rich locale for exploration, adventure and cultural excursion.

Here are just some of the interesting places to experience the magical past of Orkney:

Explore the ancient ruins of the past. If you are into ancient sites and interesting discoveries, you’ll find plenty of things to get excited about in Orkney. First, there is the popular Stones of Stenness, where you can tall stones in all shapes and sizes strategically placed to create a mystical circle. The dramatic effect is even magnified by the spectacular view of the landscape. Nearby is another interesting discovery, the Ring of Brodgar, where you can find 27 out of the original 60 stones in a circle. A short distance away is the Neolithic village on the shores of Harray.  Speculation and theories suggest that this village could have been where builders of the surrounding magnificent ruins lived at that time.

Skara Brae Prehistoric Village is another must-visit site. For centuries it remained hidden under the sands. If not for the storm that uncovered and exposed some of the ruins, this prehistoric village could have remained hidden from the appreciative eyes of today’s visitors. It is interesting that these houses contain stone furniture and are connected by roofed passageways – kudos to ancient ingenuity!

Another fascinating prehistoric ruin in the area is the Broch of Gurness. This ancient fortress offers visitors a spectacular panorama of the shores of Rousay and features what remains of Iron Age buildings and the notable clever design of their earth ramparts. Other interesting ancient ruins in the area include the Blackhammer Chambered Tomb, the Pictish and Norse settlements in the Brough of Birsay, the Tomb of the Eagles and the 10th century chapel in Brough of Deerness to name a few.

Orkney is also home to several remarkable ancient cairns. One of the most significant discoveries is the Tomb of the Eagles where bone remains of about 340 individuals, sea eagles, tools carved out of stones, and ancient potteries and beads were found. Other such interesting archeological finds include the Chambered Cairns of Wideford Hill, Quoyness and Midhowe, all dating back to thousands of years ago.

Finally, although not an ancient ruin but still a fine example of Orkney’s magical past is the Italian Chapel that can be found in the mainland. Albeit small, it is beautifully constructed and the details of its interiors are simply stunning. What is more remarkable is the fact that this magnificent piece of artwork and devotion is crafted by the hands of WWII Italian prisoners out of wood and metal scraps.

Marbella Delights

If you are not familiar with Marbella, you must wonder where in the world it is located. If you are heading or planning to go to Europe, then you’d be glad to know that it is situated in exciting Spain. You can then proceed to Calle Alonso de Bazแn and take a look at the Contemporary Spanish Print Gallery. You may be interested to know that the gallery is housed in an old infirmary, which explains the bizarre layout. After your short visit at the gallery, you’re off to the ruins of the Moorish fortress where you’ll find the remnants of Spain’s dominant forces as it re-conquered the territory from Muslim rule back in the day.

For lunch, it’s best to go to Plaza de los Naranjos. Choose one of the outdoor restaurants or cafes in the area and enjoy the pretty sight of a Renaissance fountain set against fine-looking buildings and orange groves. The 15th century chapel and the Town Hall complete the scenic picture.

If you are set for some shopping, Calle Molinillos is the place to go for souvenirs; Calle Nueva will lead you to the fashion palace of K-2; and Puerto Banus is the ultimate destination for signature luxury brands.

Aside from shopping, Puerto Banus is also a popular playground of the rich and famous. Check the countless classy yachts in the marina, sleek luxury cars along the streets, exquisite restaurants in the promenade, and the fashionable individuals that laze around the area.

If you have time for a short day trip, do visit San Pedro de Alcantara where you’ll find the ruins of an ancient Roman settlement. You also want to check out the baths of B๓vedas, the 4th century Basilica Vega del Mar and the Roman Villa de rio Verde while you are there. Attractions in Skopje Macedonia

Macedonia is the country to visit if you long to retreat to old towns with stunning architecture, centuries-old buildings and vibrant bazaars. Skopje, being the capital, is going to be your first introduction to the country. It offers visitors plenty of things to do and places to see, so it is a must to spend a few days of your time in the city.

What is most impressive about Skopje is the fact that it is a result of a massive rebuilding after the catastrophic destruction of the 1963 earthquake that struck the city. Much of the city’s treasured buildings and attractions were reduced to rubble, however there are still plenty more left standing that should amaze any first-time visitor in the city.

The most recognizable attraction in the city is the stunning historic  stone bridge that connects the old town of Skopje to its more modern portion over the rushing waters of the river Vardar. The bridge is believed to date back to the 6th century during the reign of the Byzantine emperor Justinian.

Another Skopje attraction that is believed to be as old as the stone bridge is the Kale Fortress. It may no longer serve as the impressive fortress that it once was, but it now serves as a strategic location from where you can get a good glimpse of the spectacular views of the city and the Vardar River.

Not far away from the fortress is the church of Sveti Spas, also known as the church of Saint Salvation, which is famous for its exquisite and massive iconostasis carved entirely out of wood.

For other impressive architecture in the area, there is the former Turkish inn of Kursumli An, a must-see edifice for its stunning arches and domes. There is also the former hammam or Turkish bath of the 15th century that is now converted into the National Gallery of Art.

Also, the Mustafa Pasha Mosque built back in 1519 is definitely worth checking out. Although visitors who do not share the faith are not allowed access to the area, the mosque’s exterior is impressive in workmanship and its gardens are also a perfect place to catch your breath after a full day of city exploration. For variety, you may want to check out the gigantic Millenium Cross that stands proud and mighty atop Mount Vodno.

The old Skopje Bazaar is also a must-visit especially when you want to score some good shopping finds. The bustling marketplace is full of shops and stalls that sell various kinds of goods and wares such as spices, gold, carpets and many others. It is also a good place to taste some exotic Macedonian food.

If you wish to spend a few hours of your time in a park for some R&R, you’ll be glad to find a close one in the middle of Skopje. The city park is large enough to hold a small lake, an amusement park, a zoo and a stadium, which makes it a good day time jaunt. It is also a great place to check out the night life as some of Skopje’s best nightclubs are located within the park’s vicinity.

Dubrovnik outside the Old Town

Although Dubrovnik, Croatia is almost synonymous with its stunningly beautiful walled Old Town, there are still plenty of things to do and sights to see outside of the old walls. It is undeniable that a full exploration of the Old Town takes several days to achieve; however, one needs to take a break from all the cobble stones and impressive architecture you’ll see inside.

Finally, Dubrovnik is a strategic jump-off point for other exciting Adriatic islands getaway. You can charter a yacht to any of the popular island-destinations of Elaphite, Mljet, Korcula and Pelješac. However, if you wish for a no-frills daytrip, hop on a ferry to the island of Lokrum.

Stunning Lake Ohrid Macedonia

The ancient city of Ohrid (along the coast of the majestic similarly-named lake is considered by many as the most beautiful and picturesque places in Macedonia. I certainly agree. The area combines the grandeur of nature and the spectacular genius of man as reflected in the city’s architecture. It is likewise home to the country’s most valuable historical monuments and important archeological finds. In fact, it is now listed as one of UNESCO’s Cultural Heritage Sites. 

The city of Ohrid is considered as one of the oldest human settlements in the continent, believed to have been established back in the 7th century. Hundreds of years later, the area has become an icon of history, luxury and natural beauty.

Despite its ancient historical background, the city is now home to the most luxurious hotels in all Macedonia. For natural attractions, Lake Ohrid is of course on top of the list. You can rent a boat or kayak and explore the lake’s vicinity or take a trip to the spring  source that feeds water to the lake. You can also take in the lovely lakeside views from a rented bicycle or from a comfortable chair in one of the many cafes and restaurants in the area.

If you are up for some hiking adventure, you can observe the lake’s panoramic view from an overlooking viewpoint at the mountain of Galicica. Views of the nearby Lake Prespa are equally stunning. Camping is allowed in the area and you can easily spend a day or two bird watching and wildlife spotting.  However way you wish to spend your time in the mountains, the spectacular panorama of the lakes is likely to be the highlight of the trip.
