What Else to See in Bali - Indonesia

Bali has everything that any holidaymaker can probably dream of - dramatic volcanic mountains, romantic lakes and rivers, awe-inspiring rice terraces and white-sand beaches.  No wonder it is known as the “Island of the Gods”. Its natural beauty is indeed fit to be any god’s retreat.

The beaches of Bali need no further introduction. In fact, when one speaks of Bali, what immediately come to mind are its powdery white sand shores, palm fringed boulevards and warm turquoise waters. If you are at a loss as to which beach to choose, you may want to take into consideration the volume of people that frequent the area, the concentration of commercial facilities available, access to night life, opportunities for calm and relaxation, and similar factors you feel essential for your ideal holiday.

If you want to go where the action is, check out the beaches of Sanur and Kuta, as both are popular among tourists. That is, of course, if you want to be near a plethora of hotels, restaurants and shops, and do not mind a large throng of tourists milling around.

The verdant village of Padangbai, along a powdery white shore, is another good alternative. However, there is no escaping eager tourists on this part of the island since Padangbai is a cruise line harbor that welcomes thousands of cruisers on a regular basis.

If you think Bali’s beaches are too busy for your taste, drive along the winding and picturesque road from Budugul to scenic Lake Bratan. This lakeside sanctuary - with its romance-inducing views, cool waters, and sweet scent of pines – is certainly a breath of fresh air from the hustle and bustle of the island’s touristy areas.

After cooling off in Lake Bratan, proceed to Penulisan and visit the 10th century temple of Pura Besakih. This massive temple complex stands proud on the steep slopes of the dormant volcano Gunong Agung. Grab the opportunity for a good trek and explore this area’s exciting volcanic terrain commonly referred to as the “Navel of the World”.

Another interesting trekking point is Penelokan and the spectacular view of Mount Batur’s lava streams. If jungle trekking is more to your liking, check out the forest reserve of Sangeh and the countless sacred monkeys that reside in it. Bali is also an island of raging rivers and rapids. Adventure seekers will have a grand time whitewater rafting along the rivers of Unda, Telega, Ubaya, Balian and Ayung. There are plenty of outdoor outfitters in the area if you desire to participate in any of these adrenalin pumping activities.

If you are interested in temples, there is no better place to go temple hopping than in Bali. Dotting the island are thousands of them waiting to be explored. Some of the most remarkable shrines are the magnificent Sea Temple of Tanah Lot and the cavernous Goa Gajah.

To cap off your Bali getaway, visit the Holy Springs of Tampaksiring for a rejuvenating dip. Its waters are said to have therapeutic effect – a perfect place for relaxation and invigoration just before you head back home.
