Most often than not, Phnom Penh is nothing more than a quick stop on the way to the ancient treasures of Angkor Wat. At first glance, it would seem that there is nothing special to discover in and around Cambodia's capital. However, if you look closer and spend a little more time in the city, you will find something truly interesting and heart-wrenching.
Phnom Penh has a long and turbulent history that stretches way back to the 14th century. Several of its landmarks will give you glimpses of the vital events that shaped this country into what it is today.
Phnom Penh museums are fertile grounds for an insightful survey of its history. If you are interested in the country's cultural heritage and ancient traditions then the National Museum is a must-visit. Aside from a valuable collection of relics and artifacts from the ancient times, it also features an impressive display of Khmer arts and crafts. Also, check out the museum's gallery of busts and sculptures from the temples of Angkor Wat to give you an idea of what lies waiting for you in the famed ruins of Cambodia.
If recent history is more to your liking, then the Tuol Sleng Museum is also worth seeing. But, it is not recommended for the faint hearted. There, you will find torture implements and blood stains on the walls - graphic representation of the Khmer Rouge brutality back in history.
The museum was once a security prison for political detainees and remains veiled in a bleak shadow of despair and sorrow. If you want to see more of the Khmer Rouge atrocities, then proceed to the execution field of Choeung Ek where thousands of bodies were buried in mass graves.
Admittedly, a visit to Tuol Sleng Museum is a downer. For some pick-me-up, head to the Lakeside - a favorite hang-out of backpackers in the city. The place is bustling with the exuberant energy of tourists and there are plenty of restaurants and bars in the area where you can have a decent meal and plenty of drink on the cheap. However, if you are looking for a more tranquil and charming atmosphere, you are better off at the balcony of the Foreign Correspondents Club. The overlooking view of the river and the colonial ambiance it offers make it more than worthy of the extra money a visit will cost you.
If you need a dose of elegance and beauty, a visit to the Royal Palace is a must. It may not compare to the splendor and majesty of its counterparts in various parts of the world, but it is still without doubt a place of beauty and opulence. Its lush gardens are a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Phnom Penh is also a good base for some interesting destinations in nearby towns. There is dolphin watching in Irrawaddy River in the town of Kratie, the picturesque coastal town of Kep, and the pleasant shores of Sihanoukville.
So before you head out to Cambodia's grandest attraction, you may want to first check out these lesser known yet still charming and delightful destinations.
