Equador is one of the best endowed in the world in terms of natural resources, biodiversity and natural beauty. It may not have the sophistication and elegance of other premier destinations but it offers a haven where nature lovers can retreat in splendor and awe.
Be pleasantly surprised upon arriving at the country’s capital city, Quinto. Instead of the bustling metropolis that one may come to expect, you’ll discover a city of spectacular natural beauty and well-preserved colonial heritage. Towering above the capital are the formidable twin peaks of the volcano Pichincha. Dotting around the city are precious centuries old structures of the colonial era bearing exquisite examples of the art and style of bygone times.
The Old Town is a must for a survey of striking Spanish plazas and colonial churches. The Museo del Banco Central is worth visiting for a glimpse of Quinto’s history while Monasterio de San Francisco is a must visit for a look at some of the best examples of colonial paintings and sculptures. Before you move on to your next destination, don’t forget to snap a few photos of the granite monument signifying the point of the equator at the city’s entrance.
From Equador’s capital, the surrounding areas of the Andean Highlands should be next on your list. Chota is the place to visit for some of the best traditional weaving and crafts. Its Indian market is famous all over the country and almost always bustling with enterprising locals and curious foreigners.
You may also want to check out Otavalo for more local arts and crafts. If spectacular scenery is what you are looking for, then you’re off to the region of Latacunga, home to the picturesque Parque Nacional Sangay. The park is an odd combination of various terrain such as volcanic landscapes, plush rainforests and pristine glaciers. It is also home to Tunguraha volcano where tourists flock at night to catch sight of its glowing lava.
Another national park worth visiting is that of Cotopaxi located west of the Tunguraha as well as the Parque Nacional Podocapus further south of the region. Both parks are ideal destinations for hiking and trekking. If you wish to visit an ancient Inca settlement, then you can’t bypass Ingapirca located north of Cuenca.
For some beach action and surf holidays, you want to base yourself at the coastal region of Equador. Guayaquil is its biggest city and popular among tourists. Must-visits include the lovely Paseo de las Colonias and its spectacular garden, the city’s malecāšn and its complex of impressive buildings and of course, the ancient fort of la Planchada. However, the Littoral, along the west coast, is the place to go if you are into deep sea fishing and stunning beaches.
If you wish a rain-forest excursion, then the El Oriente part of the country is the perfect destination for you. The region basically covers the Amazon basin within Equador’s territory. Ride along your river transport of choice and explore the rich ecosystems of the Amazon and the interesting indigenous tribes that reside in it.
Of course, not to be missed is the Galapagos Islands. Although seemingly barren at first look, these rocky outcrops are one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Rare animal species can be found in the area, which is a must visit for nature lovers and budding scientists alike.
