Joining the Festivities in Tallinn - Estonia

History and fun go together in Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia. What was once an old Soviet bloc is now a popular travel destination whose old world charm, bustling art scenes and lively festivities keep drawing the crowd year after year.

It wasn't long ago when Tallinn struggled under the fetters of the Soviet rule. After enduring the stifling regime for half a century, the city finally broke free in 1991. Since then, there have been dramatic transformation in the city's skyline and  Tallinn's  people have seamlessly adapted to the world of capitalism and technology.

When visiting the capital, you can easily enjoy pampering modern comforts and luxury in the spanking new hotels and high-rises just minutes away from the allure of the city's historical heritage. Tallinn's old city center is a world apart from its new business district. You can easily imagine being transported back in time with its cobblestone streets, medieval castles and baroque churches with towering spires. Taking a walk around is one of the nice pleasures you can enjoy when visiting the city. So gear up and explore the old town and its many attractions on foot.

However, for a more spirited experience, it is best to join in the many festivities being celebrated all throughout the year. Tallinn is known for its bustling culture and art scene. So, if you are into any form of creative expression just check out the city's calendar and take your pick from a plethora of events available.  The concerts, recitals and plays are definitely worth seeing, that is if you don't mind being lost in the melodic Estonian tongue.

Music lovers will fall in love with what the city has to offer. February's highlights include an ethereal experience with baroque music performed all over town. But, if you are into classical, choir and jazz music, April is definitely your best month to visit - it is when the city celebrates Estonian Music Days which include Choir and Jazz Festivals. Coming in August? the Birgitta Festival is celebrated this month, so you can have your fill of all-genre music in the heart of the captivating ruins of Pirita convent.

Fancy donning a medieval garb? You can do that with pride in the heights of the Old Town Days revelry during the month of June. Tallinn's citizens are all game - dressing up and playing a part in the occasion, so you definitely won't feel odd in a knightly suit or a jesters clothes. Also, check out the bonfires and vibrant celebration of the Midsummer's Night if you are in the city for the entire month.

Can't get enough of the flavorful beer? You do not have to wait for Oktoberfest because Tallinn has a huge celebration, namely the Beer Festival, as early as the month of July. Music is also sure to overflow, so enjoy the party!

Interested in films? Check out the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and find out what it has to offer. The festival is usually celebrated within the last two months of the year.  If you happen to be visiting in December, check out the Christmas Market after the movies. It's the best place to enjoy plenty of bargains and charming finds. And always have your camera ready!
