Perfect Day Trips outside La Paz - Bolivia

La Paz is an exciting destination on its own. But what makes it even more special is that it provides ease of access to some of Bolivia's most stunning destinations. These remarkable sites are easily reached within a few hours drive from the city. Here are some of the most exciting day trips you can take when visiting Bolivia's capital.

Valle de la Luna or the Moon Valley is just 10 kilometers south of La Paz. Across this short distance lies a seemingly extra-terrestrial landscape. Its name couldn't get more illustrative with the strange rocky canyons and towering outcrops which define the landscape.

Next is the picturesque and magical Lake Titicaca. Magical may be a term you often use for incredibly beautiful locations but the lake is this and more. Locals believe that this spectacular body of water on top of the Andes is mystical and cloaked with much power. Believe it or not, this is not really hard to imagine once you're in the middle of it. Aside from the breathtaking beauty, there are also several Inca ruins around the site to be explored and discovered.

If you want to spend a few days around the lake, the bustling town of Copacabana is the ideal base. It provides the widest selection of accommodation and entertainment options in the area. It is also home to some interesting attractions which include several Inca ruins surrounding the majestic lake.

One of the most remarkable ancient ruins around Lake Titicaca is the ancient city of Tiahuanaco. It is deemed to have been built before the Incas existed. It has some of the most striking pre-Incan architectures, sculptures and artifacts. This is a definite must-see for history buffs and early civilization enthusiasts.

East of Lake Titicaca and a short four hour drive from La Paz is the charming town of Sorata. It is the ideal destination for hikers, trekkers and bikers. Aside from outdoor adventures that are readily available, the town also offers some of the most spectacular panoramas in all  Bolivia. Bring with you some good hiking shoes and enjoy the scenic trails that this town has to offer. You don't even have to exhaust yourself, you can just take lazy strolls to view some of the picturesque vistas of Sorata.  Bring your camera!

If you are up for one of the scariest ride of your life, then muster the courage and go for a wild drive along Yungas Road. It is aptly named the Death Road due to its vertigo inducing curves, precipitous slopes and steep ravines.  This road gives new meaning to seat belts.

If you survive the drive, stop by the charming town of Coroico. Relax your nerves in one of its outdoor cafes and enjoy the view of the river meandering through the verdant forest of the Andean foothills. It is a perfect end to your adrenalin pumping adventure.

Finally, you might want to check the world's highest ski resort, Chacaltaya. It may no longer be the same ski resort it once was due to melting glaciers but its spectacular panoramas make it a must visit for visitors of Bolivia.

  1. It's also the home of San Pedro prison that's featured in Rusty Young's book, Marching Powder. There's going to be a Marching Powder Film
