Many visit Kuala Lumpur as an in-between destination, usually staying only overnight or three days at most. It usually gets a lot less attention than its more interesting neighbors such as the effervescent cities and islands of Thailand, the idyllic beaches of Indonesia or the efficient metropolis of Singapore.
It is a good thing that Kuala Lumpur is compact and easy to navigate, so you don't really have to spend more than a few days to cover the attractions it has to offer. When you are visiting with a little time to spare, here are some ideas you may be interested in.
If you want to cover as many destinations as possible, the Kuala Lumpur Hop-on Hop-off bus may be the best way to go. You wont have to spend so much time figuring out the map or haggling with a taxi driver. The bus will take you right at the doorsteps of the city's major attractions and landmarks. Your ticket is also good for 24 hours so you can take your time visiting the sights. You can disembark the bus at one of its many stops and another one will pick you up when you are ready to get going again. The buses are usually just 15 minutes apart.
Top on the list of Kuala Lumpur visitors is the world-famous Petronas Twin Towers. It once held claim to being the highest building in the world. The sky bridge connecting the twin towers is open to the public. You do need to be an early bird if you want to treat yourself to a bird's eye view of the city's panorama. Hundreds of tourist line up daily and majority of them are not lucky enough to get to the view. Slots are limited so you want to be early for it. If lady luck is not on your side or you're just too lazy to wake up early, don't worry - the twin towers impressive heights are better viewed from the ground.
While you are out enjoying the view of the Petronas Towers, check out the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center just a few minutes walk away. The center offers several attractions worth checking out. There is the Aquaria KLCC, an impressive underwater park displaying hundreds of aquatic animals. Also within the vicinity is a pleasant park.
If you want to see lovely gardens in this bustling metropolis, Kuala Lumpur has several to offer. But one of the most impressive with plenty of landmarks to boot is the Lake Garden. It is a vast 200 hectare public park that features orchid and hibiscus gardens for those who love flowers, one park full of thousands of colorful butterflies and another one featuring thousands of birds of various species. You can also go boating around the lake for a more romantic perspective. There are also several museums and a planetarium nearby.
If interesting architecture is what you are looking for then you better visit the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and its remarkable arches and minarets. There is also Jamek Mosque, the oldest surviving mosque in the city, whose design offers an insightful glimpse of the area's early settlers. If you want to see the grandest of all Asian mosques in terms of size, you're not too far from seeing one because Negara Mosque is just a short ride away.
If you want to do some serious shopping, then you're in for a treat because several stops of the Kuala Lumpur Hop-on Hop-off bus will take you right into the heart of popular shopping centers such as Bukit Bintang Plaza, Sungei Wang Plaza and KL Pavilion to name a few.
