Day Trips Outside Palermo - Italy

Without question, there are plenty of things to do and places to see in Palermo. However, the crowd coupled with the hustle and bustle of the metropolis can take its toll on you after a few days of strolling around the city.

When you feel like taking a breather that involves picturesque countryside, fresh air and old-world charm, there are several destinations that are only a few hours drive from Palermo.

One of the most popular day trips and the nearest destination from Palermo is the small medieval town of Monreale, all it takes is a short 5-mile drive from the city. The town's claim to fame is Monreale Cathedral whose interiors are renowned all over Europe. Its walls are full of golden mosaics that date back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Its cloisters are charming and compelling but the best views can be found at the roof terraces just above the cloisters.

Another popular day trip destination outside Palermo is the nearby town of Solunto. It is perched on the slopes of Mount Catalfamo and features stunning scenery. Aside from the spectacular panoramas it affords, it is also a favorite tourist jaunt for its Roman ruins that include what remains of the houses, a theatre and other buildings of this bygone era.

If you want to have a beach getaway, there are several to choose from near Palermo. There is the beautiful town of Mondello. It is a favorite resort town of Italy's rich and famous which is not entirely surprising because of its charming atmosphere of scenic boulevards lined with stunning mansions. It also features a busy sandy beach whose perimeter is usually vibrant with life and effervescent energy with its many restaurants and bars catering to a crowd of patrons.

Another seaside destination near Palermo is the town of Cefal. This picturesque little town is bounded by the sea at its forefront and the Madonie Mountains at its backyard giving its visitors several leisure activities to pursue.

You can lounge by the beach or go hiking along its trails. Other interesting destinations in the area include the ancient Temple of Diana and Gibilmanna, the churches of St. Maria della Catena, Purgatory and Monte Pieta, and the period palaces of the 13th century Palazzo Maria and the 16th century Palazzo Piraino.

Erice is another favorite day trip site from Sicily's capital. It is located on top of a hill affording fantastic views of the surrounding coast and other towns. It is a quintessential medieval town with charming old houses, romantic meandering avenues and towering castles. The views from the castles are fantastic, so take your time with the stairs and be rewarded with a breathtaking vista at the top.

Finally, what is arguably the most popular of Palermo day trips is Mount Etna, the continent's highest active volcano. Its dramatic lava-coated landscape is definitely a must-see for visiting tourists.  The area is also a popular skiing site during winter and a favorite hiking destination during summer.
