Day Trips Outside Siena - Italy

The enchantment found within its charming medieval grounds is not the only reason why Siena, Italy  is a great place to visit.

Siena is also a fantastic base to explore other visit-worthy destinations because of the ease of access it provides to neighboring attractions. There are several options to be had if you have a limited time but if your schedule is open, it is worth checking out what all of the picturesque surrounding towns and villages have to offer.

One of the loveliest day trip destinations outside of Siena is the breathtaking medieval village of Radda in Chanti. Old-world charm is an understatement in the area. Well-preserved centuries-old buildings will greet you once you step inside its ancient walls. Some of the landmarks include the remarkable 14th century church of San Nicolo and the enticing Palazzo Pretorio. Aside from its enchanting character, the village is also naturally gifted with lush woods and spectacular views making it a great setting for some outdoor activities such as walking, hiking or biking.

Another beautiful medieval town, San Gimignano, is waiting to be explored 26 miles away from Siena. It is also known as the "city of beautiful towers" because of more than a dozen towers jutting out of its skyline. Some of  San Gimignano, attractions include the 11th century cathedral of La Collegiata, the 13th-15th century artworks in the Civic Museum of Palazzo del Popolo and the ruins of the 14th century fortress of La Rocca. Although the town is famous for its medieval architecture, lovers of white wine will be pleasantly surprised to find out that the town is also known for its own variety, the Vernaccia. They are best paired with mouthwatering Italian meals in one of the many restaurants in the area.

If red wines are more to your liking, then you should visit the nearby hilltop town of Montepulciano and taste its famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. It is likewise a well-preserved medieval town perfect for lazy strolls and sightseeing. Don't miss a visit to its 16th century places and the thermal baths at S. Albino. If you want to experience the town at its vibrant best, then visit on the last weekend of August to witness the "Bravio". It is a traditional wine barrel race accompanied by a colorful parade of a jovial crowd garbed in 13th century clothing.

The landscape of Tuscany is one of the most picturesque in Italy so the best place to spend most of your time when in the area is in the outdoors. If you are into trekking, mountain biking and horseback riding, you can have all of these and more in the municipality of Murlo. The town's look and atmosphere remained pretty much unchanged in over 700 years so you will also have a fertile ground to appreciate history and architecture when in the area.

Finally, if you just want to take a trip to rejuvenate and energize your weary body then the best place to go is the village of Bagno Vigoni. This ancient settlement is a thermal spa whose popularity dates back to the Roman times. The village's structures are clustered around a huge thermal pool that is the center of attraction in the area. It is the best place to get pampered after a long and tiring exploration of the beautiful Tuscan region.
