Day Trips from Bath - United Kingdom

Bath is not just a beautiful and historical destination in England but also an ideal base for delightful day trip locations. If you are looking for a charming countryside getaway, the west country is a short drive away. If you plan to spend a day out near the water, it is also easy to get to Bristol and its surrounding towns. Moreover, there are ancient battlegrounds, dramatic gorges and other natural attractions in close proximity to Bath. So, hop on a car, a bus or a train and be on your way to an exciting getaway.

Bristol is one of the most popular destinations from Bath. It is not just an old city with a picturesque port but it is also rich in historical heritage that gives day trippers plenty of things to see and do. It's location along the Avon River made it one of the most important ports in Britain and most of its attractions have their roots on the city's opulent maritime and industrial past. Aside from the historic sights, you will also find the stunning Clifton Bridge and the attractive Clifton area nearby. There is also a fun zoo to be explored whether you have kids with you or not.

Eight miles from Bath is the lovely town of Bradford-on-Avon. Follow the footsteps of millions of others along the centuries as you pass by the ancient Town Bridge and its 13th century arches. Walk around the town center and check out the limestone houses glowing warmly under the sun, then continue uphill where you will find weaver's cottages that are likewise as appealing.

Continue on to St. Mary Tory Chapel where you will discover a beautiful panorama of the town below. Some of the most colorful streets to visit include the Silver Street and its centuries old terraces, the Shambles and its delightful little shops, and the Church Street where you will find the towns crowning glory - the Saxon Church of St. Laurence believed to go back to 700 AD.

Six miles away from Bath is the village of Norton St. Philip whose grounds witnessed a bloody battle back in the 17th century. Despite its turbulent past, the village today looks picturesque and beautiful making it one of the most delightful destinations around Bath. It is also home to one of the England's oldest inns - the 700 year old George Inn. The inn also served a significant role during the historic battle, but if that does not interest you, the wonderful view of the village that it affords will surely charm you. The Inn still welcomes patrons and guests to this day, so you may want to consider taking a meal there during your visit.

If you are looking for natural attractions, check out the dramatic Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole Caves in the Mendip Hills. It is also an ideal place for easy hikes and lazy strolls if you want to better enjoy the scenic location. Before you leave the area, pass by the village of Cheddar, whose name is a tell-tale sign of the yummy cheddar cheese  produced there.

Finally, Stonehenge is a must day trip destination when you are in Bath. This ancient monument continues to boggle the mind to this day. You may also want to go for walks while here if you want to see more of the English countryside.
