Valencia is any tourist's dream destination. Its attractions are so diverse that any visitor of varied interests will surely find something interesting and exciting. Its Old Town is a must for lovers of antiquity and old-world charm, its spectacular City of Arts and Sciences will enthrall enthusiasts of scientific advancement and modernity, and its delightful beaches will appeal to those who love the sand and the sun.
First stop is Valencia's old quarter where ancient buildings and impressive architecture are the major attractions. To see several of these centuries-old buildings at one site, Plaza del Mercado is the place to go. It is the site where you can find the beautiful Lonja de la Seda, the baroque church of Santos Juanes and the colorful and thriving Mercado Central.
One of the most identifiable landmarks in Valencia is the attractive 15th century edifice of Lonja de la Seda or the Silk Market. It is considered as the masterpiece of civil Gothic architecture which earned the prestigious UNESCO distinction of Humanity's Heritage. The buildingํs facade may look impressive but something even more special in its interiors are waiting to be seen and admired such as the Contract Hall and its intricate columns as well as the verdant garden of blooming orange trees which makes for a refreshing break. After you've had your fill of what Lonja de la Seda has to offer, proceed to the neighboring Mercado Central.
The building reveals the modernist style that was the rage when it was built back in 1914 and it could, in fact, be one of the most beautiful markets you've ever seen. The market atmosphere also makes for an overwhelming sensual experience with more than a thousand stalls and vendors selling fresh produce, meat and fish. To recover from the hustle and bustle of the central market, make a detour to the Santos Juanes Church and marvel at its 14th century gothic architecture and the magnificent frescoes decorating its dome.
Other glorious architectural examples are scattered around the city. Check out Plaza de la Virgen, a stunning public square surrounded by remarkable buildings built several centuries ago. There is the 12th century Valencia Cathedral and the bell tower of El Miguelete on one side, the imposing Gothic Palau de la Generalitat on the other, and a magnificent fountain at the center. There are also plenty of cafes surrounding the square where you can just sit down and relax while you enjoy the view.
Another major attraction in Valencia that should not be missed is the fantastic La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias or the City of Arts and Science, a vast complex of futuristic buildings that include L'Hemisferic Laserium, Planetarium, the Science Museum, L'Oceanographic aquarium and an IMAX theatre among many others. If you have kids with you or you are a kid at heart, you just have to see this amazing venue. There is so much to see and learn here and you won't believe how fast time flies when you are busy exploring the area.
Finally, do not miss the beaches of Valencia with their white powdery sand and azure waters. You can choose from the beaches of Arenas, Malvarrosa and Alboraya. You can also explore the city's impressive Maritime Station where you can hop on a golondrina and take pleasure trips around the picturesque coast of Valencia.
