Outside the Beaches of Mexico

Most people travel to Mexico for its spectacular beaches and turquoise waters. However, there are still so much to see and do in the area. Although it is easy to lose track of time when lazing around the sun kissed white sand shores, it will do you so much good to ditch the coast for a moment and explore the other treasures that make this country a favorite destination of many travelers from all over the world.

You can easily indulge in history, culture and adventure when visiting Mexico. It has centuries worth of history to see and experience, fantastic adventure locations to excite the senses and a rich culture to discover.

Ancient historical landmarks are one of the most popular attractions in Mexico and a visit to even only one of these sites is mandatory when visiting the country. Checkout the enormous ancient city of Teticuacan where you will find remnants of what was once a great civilization that dates back to about 300 BC. Its name literally translates to "place of the gods" and once you have seen the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, as well as the Citadel, you will understand why it bears those names.

Another ancient site waiting to be explored is Palenque at San Cristobal de las Casas which dates back to about 600 AD located right smack in the middle of a verdant jungle. You will not just discover a magnificent temple in the area but the trek it takes through dense forests and the stunning scenery it affords make it one of the most scenic trips in Mexico .

Moreover, a visit to the National Museum of Anthropology is a must if you want a closer look at the ancient civilizations and cultures of Mexico. It is strategically located in the vicinity of the Bosque de Chapultepec, a large park with sparkling lakes, picturesque picnic sites, a zoo and several other museums onsite.

Adventure travel is also big in Mexico. Hiking is one of the most popular considering that the lofty Mexican Sierra beckons hikers like a siren call. Sierra Norte, particularly, makes for an interesting climb with its rich and diverse topography offering a variety of challenges and stunning scenery.

If wild life watching is your passion, then you cannot go wrong at Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas. The area is especially recommended for avid bird watchers. If you want a more extreme adventure, then you might want to get a little more daring and go snorkeling with whale sharks at Isla Holbox at the Gulf of Mexico. You can also brave the Copper Canyon or Barranca del Cobre on a mountain bike if you feel like free wheeling past picturesque Mexican landscapes.

For a bit of the local culture, visit San Juan Chamula and Zinacatan Villages where you will meet the Tzotzil people who are believed to have descended from the ancient civilization of the Mayans. Sundays are the best time to visit - when the weekend market is on full swing and the villagers don their most colorful traditional garbs.

If you are more interested in the exciting culture of modern Mexico then check out San Angel at Mexico City where the lively craft market, fashionable people, ornate colonial mansions and several art museums make up most of the attraction. You can also visit Palacio de Bellas Artes to catch a cultural performance, visit the Fine Arts and Architecture museums or simply marvel at its stunning Art Deco interior.
