Kenyas Great Rift Valley

Many travelers to Kenya do not get past the marvels of Nairobi and its surrounding areas, which is a tad unfortunate because there are still so much more in store in the other parts of the country. The Great Rift Valley region is one such destination.

Lake Naivasha is a must-see in Great Rift Valley. It is home to a large population of various species of birds, making it a major destination for birders from all over the world.

The surrounding mountains are beautifully reflected on the pristine waters of the lake rendering this place one of the most scenic in the country. It is also home to Crescent Island Game Sanctuary where various rare species abound. You can easily book a boat trip if you fancy going around the famed lake entire perimeter. Accommodation should not be a problem in the area. Join the visitors congregating in the northern part of the lake and take your pick from the array of hotels and other accommodation options available. For easy access to the waters of the lake, staying in places along the beach are ideal. But, for spectacular views overlooking the lake, you will not go wrong with one of the hotels and guesthouses adorning the slopes.

Another favorite Great Rift Valley attraction is the Lake Nakuru National Park. Albeit small, the number of wild life that call this park home is no less than impressive. It’s the perfect place to take a look at the mighty lion and its pride as well as the graceful leopard, to name a few of its special inhabitants.

Even more spectacular are the thousands of pink flamingos that carpet certain portions of the lake. They easily get excited over the slightest ruckus and the rhythmic breaks by startled flamingos in flight are quite a delight to watch. You can easily lay your eyes on these breathtaking views from the several lookouts seemingly carved by nature for this specific purpose. If you happen to take a survey of the rocky cliffs, watch out for some monkeys and their bigger brothers, the baboons. 

The Elsamere Conservation Center is another attraction in the South Lake Road of the valley. Previously the abode of renowned naturalist Joy Adamson, it now continues the legacy of conservation left behind by its former owner. You can also choose to stay in the guesthouse available at the center and join in the 4pm open air tea that has become a tradition in Elsamere’s little corner. You might want to check out the small museum housed here and take a look at the exhibits telling the touching and inspiring story of the naturalist and the lioness Elsa.


 
Finally, not to be missed is the Hell’s Gate National Park and its countless steam vents and geysers. Although the name sounds intimidating, the park is quite the opposite. Its landscape is beautiful, serene and accommodating. Outdoor adventure enthusiasts will simply love this place because it’s  20 plus km trail is ideal for hiking and cycling. Other exciting things to do in the area include camping, rock climbing and, of course, animal sightings.

Attractions Near Nairobi

Kenya is the perfect choice if you want to experience the best of what Africa has to offer. The continent’s famed landscape of wild beauty, rich diversity and fantastic animal sighting opportunities are within easy reach wherever you are in the country.

Nairobi is the most visited and an easy favorite from among the Kenyan cities. This cosmopolitan city, the third largest in the entirety of Africa, sees the most concentration of tourists all year round. The indigenous tribe of Masai are the overseer of the national reserve. Get a glimpse of their colorful and proud heritage at the Masai Village where visitors are treated to visually inspiring performances of traditional music and dances.

Watch for herds of gigantic elephants – Amboseli’s superstars. Hippos and various species of birds are permanent residents in the marshes of Africa and this park is no exception. There is also a large number of grazers in the area and you can easily spot giraffe, gazelles and zebras lounging around. See how close you can get before they amble away.

The vast plains of Amboseli National Park against the backdrop of the mighty Mt. Kilimanjaro is another remarkable sight to behold after about four hours driving from Nairobi. You want to visit Observation Hill to get a picture perfect view of the park’s picturesque vistas.

The nearest national park to Nairobi, just a short two hours drive from the city center, is Mt. Kenya National Park which is the home of Mt. Kenya, Africa’s second highest peak. This is a favorite hiking destination for visiting enthusiastic trekkers and hikers. It offers one of the most picturesque climbs in Africa with its verdant forests, beautiful lakes and floating icebergs. Roughing it in Argentina

This South American gem is famous for its glitzy capital Buenos Aires. When one speaks of Argentina a colorful picture of passionate music, frenzied tango, fantastic shopping and exemplary historical figures come to mind. However, Argentina has more to offer, it is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world – the ideal site for a great outdoor adventure.

Now emerging as one of the tourist favorites in the area is Rio Negro. It is home to some of the finest resorts in Argentina owing to its picture perfect landscape of white capped mountains, romantic lakes and imposing glaciers.

During the cold months, skiing is the attraction but the area transforms into a verdant locale for hiking and mountaineering during the turn of the season. For a rewarding hiking experience, take the route to Cabeza del Indio, a fantastic rock formation that also treats its visitors to spectacular overlooking views of surrounding areas.

Other Rio Negro attractions include Nahuel Huapi National Park and the vast lake that is its namesake. Treat yourself to a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Los Glacieres National Park where splendid views of rugged mountain peaks reflected on glacial lakes are plentiful. You don’t want to miss out a striking show of nature at the Canal de los Tempanos or the Iceberg Channel where colossal icebergs collapse in the most dramatic manner right into the placid Lake Argentino. If you want to get up close and personal to a floating iceberg, you can easily book a ride on a boat at Puerto Bandera and glide along side massive chunks of ice on your way to Lake Onelli.

For some fishing action, Nequ้n is the region to go. Its town of Junin de los Andes is renowned for rich trout fishing spots. It is also home to the most scenic road routes in Argentina known as the “route of the seven lakes” where you start from San Martin to Bariloche passing along picturesque lakes, frosted mountain peaks, and a sprinkling of waterfalls and gigantic trees in between.

The Lanํn National Park is just a short drive away and certainly worth a visit for a great hike. If you crave for some pampering after your jaunts in the wilderness, you don’t have to travel far because there’s a nearby resort of Villa la Angostura at the Nahuel Huapi National Park.

Off the Beaten Path in Venezuela

Some parts of South America such as the Caribbean and Mexico to name a few, have seen their share of thousands upon thousands of tourists visiting on almost a daily basis. However, Venezuela, although now emerging towards the limelight of international tourism, is yet to see half the number of travelers that visit its neighboring countries. More likely than not, you will be flying straight to the country's capital Caracas. Don?t be hasty with your judgment of the city. After your short stay at Caracas, it's off to Isla Margarita. It is a world away from the frenzied atmosphere of Caracas. Having fun in the area is no effort at all. Whether you want night-long excitement at the casinos and bars, or an idyllic day at the beach, or an interesting visit at the island?s fishing villages, you will find something exciting to do in the area. The island?s cheery diversity makes it a favorite for tourists with varied interests.

Please make sure to visit the world famous Angel Falls at Parque Nacional Canaima. The national park is so huge it is almost equal to the land area of Belgium in size. Even more impressive is the stunning and imposing Angel Falls, considered to be the tallest falls in the world. Angel Falls stands 2,647 feet. If you can't picture it -  just imagine twice the height of the Empire State Building!

This spectacular attraction is no easy feat to visit which makes catching a sight of it even more satisfying. If you have the cash to spare, you can arrange a helicopter ride to the area. But if you are the adventurous type, an even more exciting alternative is available - a half week trip onboard a 4x4. Do not get discouraged by the number of days it'll take you to travel, there are plenty of stops along the way that will take you to other interesting destinations you don't want to miss.

Ireland - A Golfers Paradise

The Coastal Region Of Kenya

Other than Nairobi and Great Rift Valley attractions, Kenya’s coastal region is also a must visit for visitors in the country. You will not only be rewarded with sun kissed white sand beaches, but you will also get a special treat viewing centuries-old buildings, Arab-inspired villages and exciting ports of call.

Mombasa, home to the busiest and biggest port on the east coast of Africa, makes a good day trip. Don’t just pass by the area in favor of more beautiful and touristy locations.  There are a few attractions you need to check out first. Top of the list is Fort Jesus which dates back to the 16th century and reflects the turbulent history of this part of Africa.

Fort Jesus stands sentry at the strategic entrance of the harbor to protect the city from hostile invaders. Take a lazy stroll from the port towards the Treasury Square. It is not just another boring government building because it houses some of the best exhibits of wild life skeletal frames. Its Ivory Room is not called such because of its color, but rather because of the elephant ivories or tusks beautifully displayed. Game of all kinds are also well represented in the form of teeth, horns and skulls that were collected from the carcasses left in the wilds or confiscated from poachers apprehended in the area.

Just a short one hour drive from Mombasa will bring you to the vast landscape of Tsavo National Park. It’s the perfect place to get a glimpse of many exotic animals such as antelope, giraffe and rhinos.

There are also a good number of monkeys and buffalo in the area as well as the largest herds of elephant in all Kenya. Don’t be surprised by the elephant’s reddish appearance, they take on the hue because of the crimson colored soil of the region. The park features several pools, but check with the guide as to which ones have an observation area, which will be the the best place to get a closer look of the hippos and crocodiles in their real life habitat. 

For more exciting beach scenes, head to Malindi, just north of Mombasa. It is a tourist favorite owing to the stunning white sand beaches and great spots for deep sea fishing. It is also home to two of Kenya’s stunning national marine parks: Watamu’s and Malindi’s.

For diversity, check out Lamu and its idyllic way of life. This small island, one of several in Lamu archipelago, features exquisite Arab houses, charming mosques and narrow meandering streets that are a delight to walk around. Take note of the houses’ doors and their intricate carvings quintessential of Arab architecture. You can’t afford to miss the mandatory dhow trip to other picturesque islands and their beautiful beaches. It’s definitely a trip worth taking.

These parks feature a fantastic crystal clear blue lagoon and stunning beaches in an area just perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Enroute to these parks, another site worth checking is the ancient town of Gedi that dates back to the 15th century.

Discovering the Unknown Playgrounds of Jamaica

It is easy to get lost in the white sand beaches and azure waters of Jamaica. However, you will be missing much of what this beautiful country has to offer if you do not get past its shorelines. There are several other stunning natural attractions that are begging to be discovered in Jamaica's scarcely visited inlands.

The often ignored Blue Mountain of the island is Jamaica’s hidden playground. Its verdant forests, spectacular waterfalls, crystal clear streams and diverse wild life population make it an ideal location for exciting outdoor activities. It is a favorite destination for seasoned and wannabe hikers alike. The trek starts from easy strolls along scenic coffee plantation climbing up to undemanding jungle trails right into the misty peaks of the mountain. Rare wild life sightings and stunning vistas will accompany you on your way to the top.

On your way back, treat yourself to the famed restaurant of the Blue Mountain Inn or get a little pampering at the Strawberry Hill resort. There’s also the easily accessible Holywell National Recreation Park nearby that’s open for day trippers who wish to enjoy the vista but not the exhausting trek to the summit.

Another interesting attraction in the area is the century-old Jablum Coffee Company that is still operating to this day. You’ll be given the opportunity to see first-hand the whole process of coffee-making. A fine sampling of its invigorating brew is also available at the end of the tour, so give your palate a treat and take a refreshing sip.

Another relatively unknown must-see attraction in the area is the  600 ft plus cascade of Dunn’s River Falls. You can hire a guide to help you navigate the precipitous route. What makes this excursion exciting is the climb itself. En route, you’ll pass by overlooking viewpoints that display the mighty falls from various angles, all spectacular of course. Expect to get splashed by the powerful cascade every now and then. Dripping wet is the dress code when exploring the area, but if you do not want to get soaked, be poncho-ready all the way.

Jamaica is also home to one of the most impressive caves in the country. Stretching over 5,000 feet long, the Green Grotto Caves - as they are known - feature remarkable stalagmites, stalactites, natural grottos and a subterranean lake to name just bit of what you will see.

Also located in Ochos Rios, right next to Dunn’s, is the Dolphin Cove. The cove itself is a site of breathtaking beauty. It is surrounded by acres of thriving rainforest that seem to shelter it from the rest of the world. Dive right into the pool and watch out for the playful Bottle Nose dolphins. Do get a little cautious though, the cove is also known to get visits from the not so amiable sharks.  Also note that the cove is not for freeloaders; be prepared to pay a hefty admission when planning to visit the area.

Finally, do not miss out on some of the most beautiful sites in Jamaica: the Blue Lagoon and Reach Falls. The Blue Lagoon needs no introduction at all. It is etched in many people’s mind owing to the same-titled movie. Reach falls, on the other hand, is comprised of a series of mini falls and layers of amazing clear emerald pools. These sights are simply astounding and definitely worth visiting.

Most cultural sites are usually located at remote places in the tropics or the desert or on high mountain areas. Their unique locations may mean occasional extreme weather and environmental conditions.

Before packing for your trip, look for significant information about your destination - as much as possible so that you can well prepare for any exigencies that may happen along the way. Also, you want to have prior knowledge of the historical background and significance of the place you are visiting. All of this information will give you a deeper insight and appreciation of your destination and better prepare you for the geography, climate and customs of the people you are visiting.

Cultural and historical travel destinations usually display exquisite handiworks and craftsmanship that you can’t help but get a feel of the people and the region. Restrain yourself. Although the temptation to touch these beautiful pieces of art can be extremely strong - don't, if you want these sites to survive for centuries to come, you want to do your share of protecting them by not contributing to their early deterioration.

Ancient ruins usually require long hours of walking. A full canteen of water is imperative. Also, stock-up on sunscreen and wear protective long clothing if possible. Sunglasses, hats and big hankies are indispensable when out and about. Also, prepare with good protection against bugs and mosquitoes. You cannot do away with bug sprays if you don’t want patches of red skin and welts to accompany you all throughout your trip. You also need to visit your doctor before leaving for your destination. Inquire about local epidemics and be properly vaccinated for medical conditions in the area.

Also, keep to the designated pathways and do not take shortcuts along prohibited areas.  It is most likely that you will get offers to buy items that are purportedly portions of the ruins. You should do well to remember that these are nothing more than a dime per dozen fakes. Even if they are authentic, you do not want to support such a blatant disrespect of a revered location or risk committing criminal acts by buying antiquities.

Heritage sites of great religious importance may have some set strict rules on decorum and modesty that you should know beforehand. Before proceeding to the area, inquire from a local if there are certain rules that you should be aware of. Otherwise, you may find out too late that you are not properly dressed and risk being deprived of access to a spectacular site.

Finally, it may do you good to bring along binoculars. Some of these sites are so large, you may not have the energy to explore every inch of it. With binoculars, you don’t have to walk long distances to get a glimpse of certain attractions. You can just sit back, enjoy and soak up the distant sights.

Costa Blanca - Spain

Costa Blanca, a thriving tourist destination in Spain, does not just boast of pristine beaches, beautiful architecture and vibrant nightlife - it is also home to several cities and towns, every single one of which has its own specialty to offer. The region is easy enough to travel by car. The roads are well maintained and the views waiting to be seen and appreciated make traveling more than worth it.

For some marine life exposure, board the regular boat to Island de Tabarca just off the shores of Santa Pola and get ready for some serious scuba diving.

One of the most popular activities in the area – aside from chilling out by the beach – is golfing. You don’t even have to spend much effort looking for a good golf course in Costa Blanca. All it takes is a simple flick of the region’s tourist map and you have it fully marked for your convenience.

If it’s horses you are interested in, you would be glad to know that Costa Blanca also has its share of stables where riders and horse-lovers will have a great time playing and galloping with admirable horses. The entire region is also ideal for bird watching where gulls can be seen from the beaches and dunes while flamingos, herons and egrets are usual sights at the salt lagoons. If you get envious with our feathered friends and wish to join them in the sky, then visit Cabo de Santa Pola and take a heart-pumping plunge in a hang-glider or you can head to Elche and go onboard the hot air balloon for a relatively safer ride.

For Costa Blanca attractions, land animals and marine creatures are exciting to watch and observe in the outstanding zoo and seaworld facility of Mundomar. A more exciting animal safari is also available at Vergel Safari Park complete with roaming tigers and lions; you can also play and swim with sea lions if you are brave enough to get near them. Cuevos de Canelobre is also one interesting site due to the nearby prehistoric cave of skulls at Benidoleig or you can check out the more striking cave of Cova del Rull at Vall d’Ebo for a look at its stunning display of stalagmites and stalactites. Another natural archeological wonder is the rock formation of Pennon de Ifach located in Calpe, it’s a sight to see and definitely worth the visit.

If you wish to spend some of your free time around museums and historical monuments with some shopping breaks in between, then I suggest taking a day trip to the nearby city of Alicante where all these and more are readily available for the eager visitor.

As mentioned earlier, the best way to discover the area is to rent a car and go for a joy ride, that is if you are confident driving in a strange place. You are likely to discover a more endearing part of Costa Blanca during your trip, so it is better to keep an open-ended booking so that you will not have to pay for any surcharges if you wish to transfer to your newly discovered place.

Saint Petersburg is a city of Russia located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. The city's other names were Petrograd and Leningrad. It is often called just Petersburg and is informally known as Piter.

Calpe Spain Vacation

Calpe is one of the most popular destinations in the region of Costa Blanca. This former sleepy fishing village has seen dramatic transformation over the past few decades as the whole region became a favorite vacation spot of individuals and families from all parts of the world. The serene and quiet atmosphere of the town in bygone days has been exchanged for the pulsating and thriving energy of tourism.

One of the biggest draws that Calpe has for tourists is the delicious Spanish cuisine offered in many of its restaurants. Perhaps, it’s the fresh sea food ingredients that make its dishes stand out. If you want to check out this gastronomic heaven, you don’t have to spend much or wait for long. You may not think of Bulgaria as your next travel destination. But, let me change your mind. This small country is unlike any other European destination swarming with tourists.

Bulgaria has almost everything that any traveler wishes to see and experience. It has an impressive array of glitzy beachside resorts in the Black Sea Region, its own share of frosted mountains and great skiing locales, beautifully preserved centuries-old towns, great architectural marvels and so much more.

Let's pay close attention to the famous Black Sea Coast of Bulgaria. Aside from the capital city of Sofia, this region is perhaps the most visited destination in the country. Beautiful Sofia Bulgaria

Sofia is Bulgaria’s capital. The city features some of the finest ancient churches and buildings in Europe. One of the most famous of these structures is St. Sofia Church that dates back, astoundingly, between 4th - 6th century.

The church’s long and colorful history saw occupations and natural disasters one after another. It was converted into a mosque when the city was invaded by the Turks but was again converted back to an orthodox church after a portion of it was destroyed by an earthquake a little short of a half a century later. But it remains standing proud to this day, which earned it the reputation of being a miraculous church.

St. George’s rotunda church is another remarkable ancient edifice in Sofia. It dates back to the 4th century and considered as the oldest building in the area. It is perfectly located in the middle of the ancient ruins of the town of Serdica. The church is a must visit not only for its splendid architecture and long standing history but also for the exquisite medieval frescoes that were inadvertently discovered under its plaster covering.

After your survey of ancient buildings, mix in some modern variation in the form of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It is a magnificent five-nave cathedral built in honor of the Russian soldiers who died for Bulgaria’s liberation back in 1878. Check out its stunning frescoes, stained glass windows and impressive stone and wood carvings. Also you may want to check out the church’s crypts. Well, crypts may not exactly be in the list of usual tourist attractions. However, you have to make an exception where Alexander Nevsky is concerned. Its cathedral’s underground is home to some of the finest collections of icon paintings spanning the periods of 9th to 18th century that you wouldn’t want to miss.

To get a deeper insight to the history and traditions of the Balkan Peninsula and its people, the National Ethnographic Museum is a must visit. It has a fascinating collection of artifacts from the 17th – 20th century representing the culture, arts and crafts of the inhabitants of Bulgaria. Its exhibits include a variety of national costumes, musical pieces, jewelry and several works of art. It is also the perfect place for some souvenir shopping.

Another notable point of interest in the area are the piles of gigantic granites believed to have been left behind by drifting glaciers millenniums ago. Vitosha is also home to some fantastic skiing. There are several resorts servicing the area. However, due to its convenient location and easy accessibility, you can move between the capital and Vitosha without breaking a sweat.

Sofia is not just about splendid edifices; it also features the imposing but beautiful Vitosha Mountain. It is the oldest national park in the region and abode to various creatures of the wild. More than its natural diversity, it is frequented by both tourists and locals alike for its mineral springs believed to have curative properties.

You also want to visit the surroundings of Sofia. Bulgaria is a country of rich splendor and each of its regions has something unique to offer. Seaside luxury and excitement is available at the Black Sea Coast while Bulgaria’s mountain ranges are perfect jaunts for hiking and skiing in the comforts of prominent climatic and health resorts.

Art Noveau in Riga Latvia

 

Riga enjoys a strategic location with the Baltic Sea at its gateway and the Daugaya River at its borders. It is also the capital city of Latvia and a popular tourist destination.  Multitudes of tourists visit every year not only for its natural scenery but for its famed architectural marvels. In fact, it is renowned around the globe for its huge collection of Art Nouveau structures.

When visiting Riga, the first on your list of sights to see should be the Historic Centre of the city. The place is so full of interesting and impressive structural royalties that it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Drop by for a visit and you can expect a rewarding and gratifying day of sight-seeing.

As I have always done in the past, I make it a point to get a bird’s eye view of the place I am visiting. It is the best way to get a good mental picture of the whole city. The best place to do this in Riga is at the soaring tower of St. Peter’s Church.

Although it was completed way back in 1746 (the original foundation of the church was placed in 1209) you will be happy to know that the tower is now equipped with a working elevator to easily transport visitors to the summit. You can conveniently enjoy a spectacular overlooking panorama of the surrounding areas without breaking a sweat. You may also find it interesting to note that St. Peter Church is believed to be one of the highest wood buildings in all of Europe.

Next in line is the Riga Castle which is located right on the embankment of Daugaya. This impressive building dates back to 1330, although it was only completed sometime in the 15th century. Perhaps due to its remarkable design, it was chosen to be the seat of the Latvian government since 1938. To fully appreciate the castle and get a glimpse of the country’s history, a visit to several museums in the vicinity is recommended.

For a unique museum experience, check out the Motor Museum where you can see a fascinating collection of classic vehicles and retro motorcycles. Stalin’s armored limousine complete with his wax figure is also part of the exhibit.

You may also want to take a look at the largest medieval church in the entire Baltic territory – the Riga Church that dates back to 12th century. Aside from its size and long history, its extraordinary pipe organ is also something to see and hear, if possible.

For some open-air jaunts, visit the tourist favorite Mezapark, also known as the forest park where you can enjoy a quiet picnic or simply chill out in its gardens. The area is also home to Riga Zoo where the whole family can have a great time with more than 3000 animals who make this zoo their home. Just a short distance away is an amusement park to complete your day of fun and adventure. If you happen to be in the area in the month of July, it’s worth taking part in the merriment of Latvian Song and Dance Festival.

To fully immerse yourself in culture, I suggest giving Place Neuve a visit. It is where you’ll find some of Geneva’s most impressive architecture. Most importantly, it is home to the city’s Grand Theatre and Conservatory of Music where you can witness some of the most tastefully exquisite musical performances you’ll ever see.

Finally, Geneva is not all about beautiful structures and impressive cultural exhibitions. It also features the tourist favorite Plaine de Plainpalais or the Flea Market. It is buzzing with excited energy especially during Wednesdays and Saturdays. Get ready for some serious haggling because you can be sure to find something you’d like to buy from among the antiques, paintings and vintage clothing, books and records to name a few that are displayed for ready sale.

Of course, glacier sight-seeing is a must-do when in Alaska. Wait until you see the colossal and majestic whites, it’s almost a guarantee that you will be leaving in awe of such an enchanting view. What makes the experience even more special is the contrast of the verdant green forest trail you will be passing and the pristine white expanse once the massive floating ice comes within sight.

If you want to know more of the history and culture of this mighty state, drop by for a visit at the Alaska Native Heritage. It is a museum that displays pre-historic artifacts of the area as well as tells the long history of its people. Another Centro destination that should not be missed is the university town of Coimbra. It houses one of the oldest universities in the continent and the whole town permeates with a lively atmosphere of learning and fun. The town’s layout is also a sight to see. Cobbled stone pathways snake up its way from the banks of the river and meanders through bistros, cafes and boutiques.

For a further taste of history, head to the Bussaco Forest, a battle site of the 1810 Peninsular War. It can be a little crowded in Preikestolen so be ready to find your own special spot where you can fully enjoy the stunning view. "I believe it was the loss of her family," McGuirk explains. "Not having a support system around her. And that trauma - was there was no healing process for that."

The search began with just a few details about her mother. "I have her first name, we think an accurate spelling, a middle initial and a last name. We think she was in Culver City , Calif. We think that she's 27 years old," he explains.

That's all they had. And yet, with the help of a company called "U.S. Search," they were able to find not only Samara's mother, but a virtual family tree. Within two hours, the search yielded 44 family members.
This is the family Samara knew nothing about.
Samara also met her mother Lakesha.

Asked if in her own eyes she neglected her daughter, she says, "There's a lot of things that I could have done better, as a parent, I think, but I don't think, I don't think I did so much to have lost Samara."

Lakesha says she's a different person today. She has a full-time job as a teacher's aid, and is raising three young, healthy children.”

Venice of the North - Bruges Belgium

Bruges is a perfectly preserved medieval town in the Western-Flanders region of Belgium. Its idyllic setting of cobbled stone streets, 16th century architecture and winding canals made it a favorite romantic destination in Europe. In fact, it is considered by many as the most beautiful city in this part of the world. 

Moving around is as uncomplicated as going to your local park because it is small enough to be explored on foot. If you want to glam it up, you can easily hail a charming horse-drawn carriage. It's not just a good photo opportunity but also an interesting piece of artwork to look at. Along the way to the top, you will also pass by a carillon of 47 bells. If you get excited with just one tower bell, what more with more than 3 dozens of them?

If you are interested in local crafts, visit the Lace Centre at Peperstraat. It is a museum dedicated to Bruges most celebrated lace-making industry. You can get acquainted with the process of this delicate craft and how it evolved throughout the years. Of course, you can buy some of the exquisite handiwork if you can't resist the temptation of a good purchase!
   
Finally, Bruges is not called Venice of the North without reason. Take advantage of its meandering canals and the picturesque scenery along the way. There are plenty of tour boats in the area. Many of us can't get enough of medieval old towns. Aside from being visually enticing, there's a unique romantic atmosphere that seem to pervade in its every corner that many travelers, like me, find irresistible. One such medieval legacy is the capital town of Lithuania, known as the city of Vilnius.

Vilnius is home to the largest surviving medieval old town in Northern Europe. Aptly named the Old Town, it made the UNESCO World Heritage List for its rich historic and aesthetic value. There are more than a thousand centuries old structures, houses and churches to be discovered and marveled at in the area. I suggest taking lazy strolls along its ancient streets and allow its old-world charm to pleasantly transport you back in time.

First, it's nice to get your bearing of the city's expanse and lay out. One place for that in Vilnius is the TV Tower. It stands at 1071 feet and ranks as the highest structure in Lithuania. Don't worry, you will not be taking the stairs to reach the summit, it comes fully equipped with high-speed elevators. It also features a rotating platform which provides an expansive panoramic view of the city. You may also want to try bungee jumping right off the observation deck roof!

Some of the biggest and most impressive structures in the area are churches and cathedrals. Their facades alone make visitors do a double take followed by a fumble for cameras. Watch for the beautiful intricacy of the St. Anne porticos and the thousands of staccato sculptures prominently displayed in the churches of St. Peter and St. Paul. Vilnius may be a city famous for its medieval town but it remains updated with contemporary entertainment.
