There are still plenty of attractions to discover in eastern Norway outside of the capital city of Oslo. You can easily leave behind the city life and journey to nearby towns that are rich in natural appeal and bursting with plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure and cultural discoveries.
Jotunheimen is a major destination in the area. It is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts and curious travelers alike. Thrill seekers can go on guided glacier hikes along Smorstabbreen, Svellnosbreen and Boverbreen, climb the tower of Lomseggen in Lom, explore the area's caves and caverns or go river rafting along the Otta River and Sjoa River.

The spectacular village of Hemsedal should also not be missed. It is located right up in the mountains and offers splendid vistas of the surrounding areas. The Rjukandefossen Waterfall is its biggest attraction and you can take a look at its magnificent cascade from different angles by taking an exciting walk along a suspension bridge. You can also experience traditional farm life at Ulsakstolen where you can visit several pasture farms. If you are up for a long and scenic route on foot, bicycle or horseback, then you can take the challenge of the Old Kingํs Road and follow the coronation path of many Norwegian kings of yore.
Finally, if you are just looking for a day trip destination from Oslo all you have to do is take a 20-hour car drive to the city of Follo. Go for fun and excitement in the TusenFryd Amusement Park and try out the thrilling rides.
If underwater fun is what you are looking for, then you will enjoy the Drobak Aquarium. A visit to Oscarsborg Fortress is also worthwhile for those who are interested in the areas cultural heritage and history. From there, continue your historical journey at the open-air Follo Museum and the Norwegian Agricultural Museum where there are plenty to learn and discover. Finally, those who love Christmas will delight in the Tregaarden's Christmas House where the spirit of the season is celebrated all year round.
These are just some of the many attractions in Eastern Norway worth discovering. There are still the beaches of Moss, the rich cultural heritage of the fortress town of Fredikstad and the stunning countryside of Ringerike, among others, waiting to be seen and enjoyed. It is a region of spectacular beauty and exciting outdoor opportunities and more than a few visits are called for to fully explore the area's natural and cultural treasures.
