Indonesia Adventures

Indonesia is emerging as one of Asia's most popular adventure travel destinations. It is naturally gifted with lush rain forests and rugged volcanic terrain for trekking, scenic towering mountains for climbing, raging rapids for whitewater rafting and thrilling caverns for spelunking. These are just some of the exciting activities adventure seekers can engage in when visiting Indonesia.

All throughout its territory are opportunities for enthralling activities. Whether you are an adrenalin junkie or a newbie in outdoor adventures, you'll find Indonesia the ideal playground to have plenty of fun and excitement. Whatever be your sport of choice, you are most likely to find the perfect spot for the ultimate adrenalin rush experience.

Indonesia is home to more than 50,000 miles of coastlines with some of the richest and most diverse marine ecosystems in the world. If you love diving, you definitely will not find the country's waters wanting. Some of the most interesting diving locations include a national marine reserve in Sulawesi, the vast atoll of Take Bone Rate and the world-famous Tukang Besi. Some of the most scenic underwater sights are off Padang at Pulau Suai and Banda Aceh at Pulau Weh.

Trekking is also a popular attraction in Indonesia. The many volcanic terrains provide the perfect location for exhilarating hikes. Java Island is a major destination for trekking with Krakatoa, Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen on its realm.

Kawah Ijen and its spectacular azure lake crater is a special must-see. When in Bali, Gunung Agung is the place to go. For the most scenic treks, check out Gunung Rinjani at Lombok where you can relax in the restorative waters of its hot springs. There is also Keli Mutu at Nusa Tenggara Barat and its dazzling, not one, but three mineral lakes. Make sure your camera is fully loaded since you do not want to stop shooting the stunning views of this magnificent area.

Jungle treks are best done in Bukit Barisan National Park in Sumatra, Muller Mountain in Kalimtan and Lake Habbema on Irian Jaya. Watch for delightful surprises along the way, from isolated villages through colorful tribes and right into turtle sanctuaries on a remote and lovely beach.

Climbers will find the basalt cliffs of Gunung Padang a challenge. It is not easily accessible, making it even more exciting. Climbers will have to paddle their way along scenic views of the river and go for an easy hike in the middle of a rain-forest before finally reaching their climbing destination.

If you happen to visit during the months of November through March, check out the rapids of the mighty Mahakam River at Kalimtan. Countless numbers of rivers branch out from Mahakam making it one of the most exciting destinations for whitewater rafting. For the ultimate adventure, join a week-long rafting tour that will take you from the ports of Samarinda, through jungles and remote tribal villages upriver.
